I just got a 98 Disco and the ride feels a little bouncy. I wanted to go with the bilsteins but I don't if they will give hard ride. Does anybody have them or any other ideas? |

How do you use your truck? That will dictate what type of shocks you should use. Bilsteins are firmer. They make shocks for Porsche. They are a good highway shock. OME's are good for offroad and heavy loads. If you want a soft ride stay stock, Woodheads. -John |

I thought Rancho's had been thrown out the "Window". |

What about Bilsteins with HD springs? That seems like it would be a good combination of on and off road, doesn't it? I'm curious too as I was thinking of something like that as well. |

I would go with OME, maybe Ranchos if you like shocks that break |

I'm running Bilsteins with hd ome springs for an 80/20 road/offroad mix. I like the ride and the control the combination offers, much better than stock. If I was spending the bulk of my time offroading as opposed to road building I would have gone with the OMEs. As John said above the Bilsteins are a good option for mainly road use where as ome shocks are more suited for serious off roading. Just my .02 Steve |

Steve, What was the height increase after this setup? I know that Bilsteins with LR HD springs is about 1.5" and is supposed to be pretty good all around setup, just wondering what it is with the OME springs as many people have suggested to me to go to OME springs. Also, what size tires are you running with this setup? My road/offroad mix is also similar to yours. 98 D1 BTW |

Just replaced original shocks on my 96 with bilsteins, still have original springs, all bounce and squishy feeling is gone, car just feels solid now but not harsh or rough ride at all, if anything the ride is much smoother on the road. is there a suggestion for someone who has bilsteins and wants to upgrade springs for a 90/10 on road/ off road set up. Shawn, Did the Bilsteins change height of truck? |

No change in height, alan, I would prefer if the truck were slightly higher, maybe an inch and half (kids still need to climb in) and was wondering if a Heavier duty aftermarket spring would accomplish this. The bilsteins are a huge improvement over the worn stock setup, also switched to the cross drilled vented rotors from RC at the same time, bye bye brake fade. |

shocks don't change the height, thats what springs are for. |

the bilsteins are highly gas charged shocks and have about 125lbs of compression needed to start to compress them so with 4 of them they will add a minoot amount of lift. I have LR heavy duty in back with stock rears in front with bilsteins and that set up gave me about 1 3/4 to 1 7/8 taller then it was stock |

I should have phrased that better I meant that they won't cause any substantial change. |

Alan, Does your truck have an SD sticker on the fender? If that it is what it looks like in the pic, the body shop that did that fender put on the wrong sticker, it should say LE. fwiw... |

actually, are you sure thats not a 99? it has 97-98 wheels, but it doesnt have fogs in the spoiler. The 99s didnt have the fogs in the spoiler and they were SDs, like the sticker says. Yeah, Im bored at work.. |

I talked to the fellows at Rovers North a while back and they indicated that with Bilstein shocks and LR HD springs all the way around will result in 1.5" lift but I wasn't sure what it was that caused the lift. I guessed it was the springs but I've heard others say that sometimes shocks increase height a bit. In any case, that combo seemed to offer the best compromise between on road and off-road handling and it took some of the body roll out without making the ride so harsh, it feels like you're riding a tractor. I'm assuming that OME shocks are even stiffer?? Gil: Hmmm, now you've got me thinking. Yes that is a "SD" sticker on the fender and as far as I can tell it's a 98. The dealership insisted it was a 98 and when I ran the VIN# through CARFAX, it comes up as a 98 model. The insurance agent also confirmed the same thing but I've always wondered as if you do a search for 98 SD's they don't seem to exist. They had SD in 99 though, I think, so I've wondered if this was a late 98 model or something wacky like that. What's the difference between SD and LE?? The interior is not leather and it has no sunroofs so as far as I know, it's a SD. Hey Gil, do you own some kind of Land Rover farm?? |

yeah Alan, its a mini-farm, I have a problem and i am seeking help.. 99 SDs had leather roofs, and everything else a 98 LE would have had. Im guessing it is a 98 if the vin says that, but it was probably hit and redone in the front at some point. This would explain why it has the wrong sticker and spoiler. |

Alan, "What was the height increase after this setup? Also, what size tires are you running with this setup?" In answer to your questions: About 2 inches of height increase using a matched set of passenger side springs from EE. The setup works well for me as I'm now not dragging the spoiler on construction sites. I'll be going to 245/75s with the next tire change and save the axle a little abuse. Presently I'm still on 235/70s stock rubber and rear bottom edge of the front door is 20" off the ground give or take 1/4". I'm very pleased with the setup it's comfortable and it handles my lead foot very well. Mind you, my other rides are a Dodge 4X4 dakota and a Ducati 996 so what I consider comfort others may consider rough. Steve |

Gil: the VIN# history comes up clean too. This thing was never in an accident and there aren't any signs of it either. I've sent off emails to LR asking them about the existence of SD's in 98 so hopefully I'll hear back. Maybe this isn't a NAS Disco or some cross over model between the 98 and 99 year or something weird like that. Steve: thanks for the reply. Been thinking about springs and shocks to help improve on road handling as well as give myself a bit of an off-road advantage if I can so any info is greatly appreciated. As I understand it, OME stuff is much more geared towards off-roading which I don't want to go that far. Maybe in the future when this thing becomes more of a toy. |

a car could have still been in an accident and come back 'clean'. carfax only picks up accidents that have been reported to the insurance company. many times people do not report accidents to the insurance company as we all know, simply to avoid it going on their insurance and because their deduct. is high. but most likely it was not a big fender bender or it would have been. |

Oh I realize that it's very possible for accidents to not be reported. I've been in little fender benders before where it wasn't worth it to go through insurance for something like a cracked signal lense but in this case, if the sticker is incorrect, it's so on both sides and I can't possibly see a body shop being dumb enough to do one side different from the other and not notice or for the accident to be large enough where both sides have to be replaced and have it not go through insurance. But I guess anything is possible... |

Gil: in case you're interested, I talked to someone from "Land Rover enthusiast" magazine who confirmed it with Land Rover Canada and there apparently was an SD model in 1998 but it's rare. They came out with the "L" designations the same year but still had some SD's around so it looks like there was a bit of crossover in late 98 early 99 with the SD's. What distinguishes these SD's are the black bumpers with no fogs, cloth interior, manual seats and no sunroofs...which was what I was looking for in the first place so I guess I kinda fell into this one by shear luck as they're hard to find with this configuration. |
