I'm looking at maybe getting a 98-00 Discovery. What's the pro and cons between the series 1 & series 2?

Is it worth the extra $$$ to get a "certified" LR?

Anything else I should know before I buy one?

Thanks,

Rick

A Series I has the CDL, and less rear overhang.

A Series II has a lot of electronic features such as HDC and 4ETC in place of a CDL, more cargo space, optional SLS and ACE.

Drive them both, and see what you like. What are your plans for the vehicle?

My plans are daily driver and an occasional off-road excursion.

I drive my DI daily, 40 miles one-way to work. Supposedly, the DII rides a bit smoother, but I can't verify: I've not driven a DII.

My DI is fine off road. With a CDL added, a DII is great. Even w/o a CDL, though, it'll do fine for your "occasional off-road excursion", assuming that's not a monthly trip through the Amazon. :) lol...

Still, drive both, compare prices, decide what you like best.

IMHO...

LOL, here we go again... :)

Center Differential Lock, aka CDL. The transfer case has a differential in it; locking it will force half the power to the front and half the power to the back. The CDL lever on a D1 can put the transfer case into high or low, locked or unlocked, or neutral. The D2 can't lock the center diff. Unless, you have an early D2 and retrofit the CDL mechanism (or rig up the engagin lever, etc.). The newest D2 x-cases don't have the CDL stud, though, so they can't be locked (easily, w/o a LOT of modification).

So, CDL is great for what? Off roading? ...??

I have owned both. I like the ride of the d2 better, but the d1 is nicer for off road and accesories. The accesories are much easier to find and are usually less expensive. The seats are more comfortable in a d1, but the d2 is smoother on the road.

For commuting, go d2, for off road go d1. For your stated purpose I would go d2, unless you want to accessorize the hell out of it. Then d1, is cheaper.

Kristopher,

Yes. W/o the CDL locked, the x-case will try to send all the power to a slipping wheel. W/ a DII, the 4ETC will use the ABS to trick it into distributing the power, and thus, supposedly, doesn't "need" a CDL.

W/ a CDL locked, there will be power to one of the front wheels, and power to one of the rear wheels. You will have at least two wheels providing movement. Add a locker, and you'll have three wheels giving you added traction.

Thanks for the info guys.

New complication... I dunno if I can get the Disco in my garage! It may be too tall.

I guess I could replace my door with on of those segmented ones to gain 6 inches though. Still it adds a few thousand to the price.

Rick,

I have the same problem with the D1 I just bought. I did not think to measure it to see if it would fit in the garage. With the adventure rack and the 4 Hella 4000 on top it is about 8 in. to tall for the door. But I love the truck. sometimes you have to make compromises to get what you want. There will be no point in making the door taller because of the planned lift and taller tires.

Good luck with you purchase

Why do you want to fix your garage door when you can dig ? :)

I'll just have to get out the tape and measure it out. I'll probably go by the dealer (LR of Anaheim Hills) tomorrow and scope it out.

I was surprised when I brought my '96 home, I have a normal height garage and it fit easily, I was even able to hard mount a Barecrafters ski rack to the roof rack cross pieces and if I turn the skis upside down with the bindings over the front moon roof it still fits!! Surprised me how much room I had, although a rack is absolutely out of the question...

Ask the dealer(or whoever you buy it from) if you can run it by the house and see if it fits, you never know!! JMcD

Do what i do, Deflate the tires every night before going in the garage, inflate in the morning. You have to get up about 45min earlier in the morning, lol.

PS until new garage is build

Actually I live in a condo and the garage is underneath so a new garage is not a possibility. There is a parking area but it's hard to find spot and I've had 2 cars broken into and one stolen in the 11 years I lived there.

The garage door option is a lot cheaper than I imagined so if it will fit through the door frame, it will make it into the garage.

GET ME A TAPE MEASURE! ;)
