The brackets on Wilderness System roof racks are only attached vertically, and can rotate on impact with tree limbs, etc. The ARB rack brackets, for example, have two horizontal allen screws that keep the brackets much more securely attached to the gutter rail.
Has anyone here who has this rack ever put a different bracket on theirs? Before I have something made up, or modify the existing ones, just wondered if anyone had ever done this before...

Enoch, I'm not sure I understand what you're saying but are you talking about the feet for the rack itself or the brackets for the attatchments such as Axe and hi-lift jack? I have never had the feet rotate on impact to trees but I did hit a tree hard enough to bend the bolts to the outboard axe bracket. I suggest mounting these on the rear of the rack or on the inside. If you're talking the feet, I would make sure they're very tight. I have yet to have them move and I've been in some trails cut for TJ's that were VERY tight and the only way through was nerfing off trees with the rack. From the looks of the trees on the trail I wasn't the only one doing it either and the land owners said it was okay if I took some bark off or I would have felt bad for the trees but the rack never moved. And it even saved my alpine windows from damage.

I also have had to use the rack against trees. I'm speaking of the feet themselves, where they bolt to the truck. I've tightened them till they've cracked the plastic on the rail. But if you really pop them against something, the main bracket can rotate slightly in the gutter, and then the outer bracket does as well. I've been thinking about drilling a hole through the both pieces of the bracket and bolting them to each other, so they can't move independently of each other. That would be the simplest way, I guess. As tall as Discos are above the gutter, you can't use a lot of generic attachments. Thanks.
