Okay i've been playing with automobiles since i was 12... That's been a long time! But this one's got me baffled... My wife came home the other night and shared that the Disco was knocking...I went and listened and it was lightly.. Like a lifter.. The next day i had a closer look and drove it around.. The hotter it got the worse it got..Til the point of sounding like a rod!!! I got the stethescope out and had a listen... It's in the drivers side cat!?! Combustion? A baffle? Man it's noisy but the truck runs pretty good.... Ideas? |

Its the cat. This is a common problem. The fix is to replace cat. Its safe to drive. To verify this, hit the cat with hammer to see if rattle is comming from there. |

That's the trip... I whack the cat and it doesn't rattle!?! And it does sound like a knock... It does go up and down with RPM... But using all means i can't hear it in the block//heads ETC.. When i trace the sound with the stethescope the sound progresses from the cat "Loud" to the junction in the y pipe "Loud" When i follow it towards the head it definately gets quieter (by a lot) Further testing this afternoon showed the cat glowing red after a bit of a run on the jackstands but a test drive showed only a slight miss up to 3K when it went away We have 83K on the odi and the heads have been looked into at some point as can be attested by witness marks on the bolt heads... The sound it really tinny but quite violent... I'm thinkin' cat too but i've never heard such a thing! |

When my cats went bad I had a similar rattling, whacking it with a rubber mallet didn't make them rattle, but it was definitely a bad cat and yours is probably bad too. Just replace it with a Catco universal cat, very cheap, do a keyword search for Catco. |

So for the benefit of those who waited with baited (?) breath for the outcome of this mystery i have found the problem... I had a cat replaced (it was bad) but still had a miss... I dug around and found that one of the spark plugs was no longer working! Special Dealer installed Champions... It's got Autolites in it now and runs smooth as silk! Really smooth! At the risk of starting a flame i have found Autolites to be the best (most reliable) plug out there (in my vehicles that have spark plugs)I shoulda known better! |

the autolites are the best cheap plugs IMHO as well. |
