My wife and her sister are in the Discovery traveling back to Kansas City area from Nebraska. Still about 100 miles from here. She called and said the vehicle is not running right. From her description, sounds like the transmission is shifting back and forth at speeds less than 70 MPH. She says engine seems to sound OK, but keeps "chugging" as transmission shifts back and forth. Any ideas? Suggestions? Are we damaging the vehicle engine or transmission by letting her continue?

Year is 1996. No check engine light showing. Don't know about tachometer.

A common problem is the vehicle speed sensor on the side of transfer case. It will cause bucking and surging at highway speeds. If you are sure it has trans fluid, I would drive it home. If she slows down to around 35 mph it should go away. If it does, tell her to get back on highway and drive home if possible. it shouldn't leave her stranded. Throttle position sensor on throttle housing could also cause this but it usually turns on the light.

I am betting the VSS. Ask her if it sounds like a govenor is choking the engine at highway speeds. If so VSS. Easy fix.

Well, she made it home. Says the vehicle calmed downed the last 50 miles or so. Thanks for the responses. The VSS does sound like a possibility. I'll take it to the dealer first thing tomorrow so they can check it out.
