Hi,
I just bought a 1996 Discovery. When I turn, the steering makes a lot of noise- not squealing, but like an over-burdened pump would sound. I'm not asking it to do any more than ussual driving- any ideas much appreciated!
Cheers,
Paul.

is it low on Fluid? MY 96 has a slow leak and when it gets low, it makes a low roaring noise.

Be sure to use ATF fluid Dex. III and not power steering fluid. Mine's a leaker too, but usually no noises.. Later.. RS

Might try bleeding it first, and then start looking for problems. There is a bleeder screw on top of the gear box. While I'm not certain of the procedure (anyone? I just read it-dammit!)I believe it is as simple as opening the valve until fluid flows, and then turning the wheel from lock to lock a few times, and then closing the bleeder.

Blue:
I'm disappointed! I expected a picture with a scantily clad model pointing to the bleeder screw.

and Rob or Garrett, don't even think of downgrading the discussion further by using a pun involving "bleeder screw"

and to answer Paul K. - my power steering PUMP (that's the power BOX in the photo above) starting making noise due to low fluid level in the reservoir, and it eventually ate it's own bearings and needed to be replaced.

Thanks for all your help guys- I'll investigate this weekend and let you know how it goes. I love this thing- but now I feel sorry for all the people who bought 'other' SUVs...
Cheers,
Paul.

Turns out it was low on fluid- due in part to a slight leak. Thanks to all who advised- I'm sure I'll need that info sometime!
Thanks again,
Paul.
