MY 96 disco has been running cool for about a month now. I changed the thermostat last week thinking that it had stuck open. still running cool. Any ideas. Thanks

did the new thermostat seat right.. or did you put it in the right direction? chances are there is something wrong with the current one...

A pot of water on the stove top and a thermometer allows for easy testing of thermostats.

Test the old one you took out before pulling the current one out. If the old one is fine, the new one is probably fine and the problem is elsewhere.

Sometimes cooling system issues don't seem to present themselves the way we expect. My '55 Pontiac will run cool(160) when the coolant level drops. It has a rather large 24 quart cooling system with the top of the radiator is well above the engine so a quart or two drop still leaves the engine completely 'submerged' internally. I don't know why it does this but it does. Then as the coolant level drops further it starts to run hot, as I would expect. I know all this because of a seep in the radiator that I didn't get repaired for a few years.

I don't imagine this is true in your case because you changed the thermostat and thus topped off the coolant.

Test old thermostat(if nothing else out of curiosity) and try a different source for temp information. The sending unit or gauge could be telling you you're cool when you're not(hehe).

I have a 96 that has just started running cool. Where did you buy your thermostat? I have checked Auto-zone, Advanced Auto, and Parts Plus. None of these stores said they carry the part and i would have to go to the dealer or mail order the part. Thanks

Thanks for the tips. I had to buy my thermostat from the dealer here in chattanooga. The bone heads at Autozone did not understand why the thermostat for a toyota would not fit. I am still running a little cool about 155 degrees. For the next couple of days I will just block a portion of the radiator off with some cardboard. I have a couple of days off next week. I will have a closer look at it then.

I had removed my thermostat back during the summer due to the Disco running Extremely hot. It's always nice to cruise down the interstate in 90+ degree weather with the heat on full blast. Especially in traffic, that was great. Anyhow, I just replaced my t-stat last night and drove around and she now warms up quite quickly. It was quite nice to have heat last night. Anyhow, I made sure to follow a thread I saw on here awhile back. Good pics just to make sure you don't put that thing in there incorrectly. Also, I found that it was easy to unseat the t-stat when trying to re-assemble. My suggestion would be to pull it apart and make sure it doesn't get knocked loose during re-install. I'll find that thread and post the link for you.. Later.. RS

may I ask a dumb question?

I changed my thermostat today on my 96, and I was wondering where most of you drain a little of the coolant from. The radiator hose on the bottom right is directly above the frame and hard to get at to release it. Is there a better way? the rear of the engine block, there are two bolts to release coolant there, I think?

thanks for the help!
