It seems that I have a slight humming noise when I accelerate at lower gears. The noise seems to be coming from the Serptine belt in the alternator area. The humming started when I got some mud splatter in that area. Something like this happened to me once before and my belt went. Is this normal or is something wrong? Is the belt breaking related to the noise? What could the problem be?

Well I had a slight hum that became less and less slight and more of a grinding than a hum. Before it got substantially worse I put on a new alternator after determining a bearing was bad by listening to the various components using a stick. Nasty sounds coming out of the back of that alternator. Now to rebuild the old one for a spare.

How about replacing the belt and seeing of the noise goes away? I off-road quite a bit here in Florida and I'm only getting between 5K and 10K on each belt.

Replacing the serpentine belt has been discussed in length on this bbs, so a Keyword search should give you good info on changing it. It's a $25.00 part (or so) and takes about 15 minutes to replace.

Like the other post mentioned, it could be the alternator bearings. Or it could be the belt tensioner.

Thanks,
Mike B.

The last time it went I was told that my idler pulley was gone, (guessing it went and caused the belt to go). It seems that happens every time I go offroading. I checked the belt and its in good shape. When the belt was replaced everything sounded normal. I guess it could be the belt tensioner.

Is the belt tensioner hard to replace? Also are there any web sites on where I could find a detailed belt diagram? Also does anyone know if I can get a belt and belt tensioner at Napa or someplace like that? If so does anyone know the part numbers?

Thank you for the time.
