My fuel gauge for my 97 XD has a new tendancy to show only a half of a tank or just go up and down even when the tank is full. The low fuel light that comes on when you are almost out of gas is on, and the needle is at the half way mark. Is this electrical or something in the tank?

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Todd -- you may have a problem with the fuel float. Which, unfortunately, (I think) is in the gas tank. Try checking all electrics before you drop the gas tank (remember no smoking).

I am not totally familiar with the electronics that relate to the fuel gauge. Can anyone point out what I should be checking prior to the float in the tank?

Also, would the float act up only occasionaly, or once it goes bad, would it just stay that way?

Todd, You will have to change the fuel pump. The float is apart of the pump. You do not have to drop the fuel tank to replace this pump. It has an access cover under your rear cargo carpet. Unfortunatly the fuel pump is not cheap. There is no way around this. I have done this many times as a landrover tech.

Is it possible to just buy the float piece of the pump? The dealer informed me this morning that they have heard of people buying that piece from some of the vendors like EE, AB or others.

If not, any recommendations on where the best place to buy a new fuel pump? The dealer cost is $300.

Thanks!
