I was crawling around under a new Disco at the dealer this afternoon, and I saw this thing bolted to the front of the rear diff (to the left of the driveshaft coupling). It looks like a weight and has a little wire cable running back to the axle.

What is it? I have never encountered anything like it before. Do earlier models have it?

I was really impressed with the engineering and stoutness of the LR drivetrain - it makes my '91 Cherokee look pretty wimpy. I hope to buy an '03 S model within a few months.

Thanx.

I wondered the same thing - maybee the last line of defence as the drive train is falling out.

PS. They are a little tank

Sounds like a dynamic balancer.

If so... it is a weight placed to counter-act vibrations from the rear DS.

That would be my best guess.

But what is the wire itself for?

To keep the thing from becoming a projectile should it fall off on the highway at 65mph/100kph.

Thanks - I thought it might be some sort of "tuning device" to reduce the NVH from the drivetrain. No offense intended to anyone from the Mother Country, but it does look extremely .....British. Or "odd" might be a good description.

Has anyone ever taken one off to see if the DS blows up or anything?

I remember hearing about someone that did remove it and didn't notice any change but I can't remember who it was. I never had a need to try it myself. It's out of the way enough that it hasn't bothered me.

I removed the dynamic balancer that was on my front diff. (96 D1) I did so experimentally when I put on my $G Rock Guard, and have noticed zero ill effects to this day.

I replaced my rear DS with a HD unit from Great Basin Rovers. It replaces the rotoflex joint with a HD Spicer u-joint. Because of this I thought that I no longer needed the harmonic balancer, so I removed it.

At speeds between 60-70 mph, I would get this harmonic "hum", kind of like being inside a big drum. Very annoying. Didn't notice any severe vibration, but the noise was intolerable, so I replaced the balancer and all is well again.

Greg:
Does the GBR HD rear DS replace the pinion flange too?

Mike, yes it does. The kit is complete, and can be done at home. However, I couldn't get my stock flange off so I had my dealer finish the install.
