I tried to post this before and it disappeared into the internet black hole; so here I go again. This weekend I installed a set of OME medium duty springs on my wife's 94 D1. I raised the truck up 2+ inches in the front and about 1.5 in back. There is now a low humm/vibration on acceleration that wasn't present before. I replaced the rubber coupling (rotoflex?) about a month ago. I know there have been questions about the reliability of the rubber coupling discussed before. Questions: Is it possible to replace the rubber coupling with a u-joint? (I think I know the answer on this one.) Is it possible to get just the rear part of the drive shaft to convert it to a u-joint? (and not have to buy the entire driveshaft unit.) Is there something else I should check/watch for after doing this mild lift? Thank you! Tad Questions: |

Welcome to the land of no return. You'll need the whole shaft, but it's better anyway, and then... ya never know, it may fix the vibes, but you may need a front shaft too. and then ya still never know? good luck |

Tad: I am doing exactly what you described, however, in my typical fashion, it may take me the rest of the year to finish. I have obtained a donor driveshaft (thanx Matt-what the hell did you do to tear up that rotoflex?) to have the rotoflex flange cut off of. I will have a local driveshaft shop fab the u-joint yoke for the shaft and I am pursuing the pinion flange and the u-joint yoke/flange from overseas. Even after doing this as was suggested by Mike, there is no guarantee that it will solve anything other than my curiosity. FWIW, I have a ~3" spring lift (apparently my stock springs were sagging badly) and 32" tires. I have no vibrations since I replaced the badly cracked rotoflex and pounded the balancing weights with broken welds back into position. E-mail me direct in a couple of weeks and I'll let you know how the progress is. Peace, Paul '95 Disco |

Actually that rotoflex was only 4 months old with about 3000 miles on it. Matt |

Tad, When you replaced the Roto, did you bother to replace the rubber bushing? If not, then this could be your problem. |

Paul, I am thinking that you are speaking of the inner bushing. The answer is no; it was so rusted in place I left it. I know, I know. I couldn't get the old out and I didn't take the time to remove the entire drive shaft. (Bad mechanic, no off-roading for you this weekend!) I still have it and will try again this weekend. Thanks for the advice. Have SOme Fun! Tad |

Talked about before, do a search. |

Did a search using rotoflex and u-joint and universal joint with no success. That's why I posted the question. I will gladly take any suggestions of what to look for! |

You, will need a new flange to go in your rear diff can buy from LandRover this will take the new coupling off the new uni. Any tail shop can do the mod its just a matter of cutting the shaft at the rear of the roto flex and welding on a new joint and belancing it up. The hum should go with this mod and with roto flex replaced you can go higher the front is a diffrent story as shorter. If you need more info let me know. |
