I have a '00 D2 with 46K miles. All the factory scheduled maintenance was done by the dealer. At 45K it has brand new brakes all around, battery, radiator, cylinder head gaskets and no leaks in the drivetrain. Dealer is recommending extended warranty from Heritage for $3900 4 year 50K additional miles. I want to modify the rig for more off-road use and was told that if I put anything but LR springs, it will void my warranty which I feel is BS. I plan on putting away some cash every month or so so basically self warranty. Any thoughts or comments on this? TIA. |

My thoughts on the subject were similar to yours when I purchased my 98. The cost at that time was 2800 for one year. I have purchased extended warranties on other vehicles I owned. On one I broke even after I added up all the items that were fixed. The other was never used. You have to figure for 3900 you can have a lot of work done. The downside is a catastrophic failure of two systems at the same time. I say keep doing your repair fund and you should be fine. Just make sure you keep up on all the maintenance. |

About 3000 miles before my warranty was up I had a U-Joint go when I was driving on the road and when it went the U joint smaked my transmission and cracked it. To make a long story short I had almost 6000 dollars of damage to my car (all under warranty). I was sold on the extended warranty. Also could you get a warranty with a higher deductable? I got 50,000 2 years for 2100 with 100 dollar deductable. |

I option to remember with things flying off and breaking other things is that with the proper wording from your mechanic, things like that can be covered by most reputable insurance companies under comprehensive damage from striking road debris. |

When we bought our D1 two years ago we got an EW thru Buyers Choice for a very good price ($1800/7yr/100k/$100deduct). However, we have not been able to use it yet. It seems that many of the things that go on Rovers (at least mine) are items not normally covered, such as leaking seals. The one big-ticket item I tried to claim was a frozen center-difflock (which is still frozen ). I didn't understand the difflock when I bought my truck (a BroncoII was the only other 4x4 I had owned), was mislead by the sales staff (not a Rover dealership), and it wasn't until I bought an owners manual a month later that I realized I had something that didn't work. The previous owner was a mall-crawler and the thing had frozen solid. Buyers Choice refused to cover work on it saying it was broke due to lack of upkeep / lubrication. I have a rear break caliper that has gone bad and am starting the process today to claim this (calipers are listed as "covered" for me). I have a feeling I'm going to have to fight them on this one too, but this time I'm not going to let it go. We really debated getting the warranty, and have told ourselves a few times that we still have it in the event we have a catestrophic engine or transmission problem. But as hard as it is to get anything done that's listed plainly as "covered", I would recommend you really think hard. We do a good job of keeping a cash buffer in our accounts to cover unexpected problems, and in retrospect I wish we would have just put the $1800 in there. Our Saturn (230k miles) has been out of warranty for years and we just handle any problems as they come up. Lawrence [email protected] 96 Disco - Beowulf - NH, USA |

So your calling the previous owner a "mall-crawler" but you havn't engaged the center diff lock in the two years you have owned the truck either?????? Get under there and spray it down good with some penetrating oil and then man-handle that lever back and forth, keep repeating this process and will give then find a trail, engage that thing and let it strectch its legs. |

If you plan on modifying your DII, then I'd say skip the extended warranty. I approached my service mgr at 48K miles and he told me that if it were him, he'd pocket the money for future repairs because most extended warranties won't cover modified or aftermarket components. |

Carter, I hope you did not confuse the fact that I haven't used the diff lock (due to it being inop) to not taking truck to the trails. I go out at least once a month in all but the winter months. As for "spray it down and man-handle it", trust me...I've gone thru the whole troubleshoot process. Don't believe me, do an archive search for my name and the word "Diff". I've pulled the whole lever mechanism out several times to work on it, and monthly open the center console up to soak it down again w/ PBBlaster. It rotates between Hi/Lo fine but won't slide in / out to engage the diff. And it's not just the shift mechanism. I cannot engage the diff manually from under the rig either, so I fear the internals are also a corroded, gummed up mess. I just don't have the time or $ to persue fixing it on my own yet. You know, I'm often dumbfounded that you can buy an aftermarket locking diff for front or rear at or below $600 (depending on brand, etc) but pretty much all my attempts at tracking down a replacement center were in the $1200 - $1800 range!! At least driving a Disco without a locked center diff for the last two years really encourages good driving techniques. I've only gotten stuck in one ditch (my fault - bad approach angle) and in one mud slop. I have attended the LR Driving School at the Equinox in VT and based on that and time spent in other people's Discos, I have to say I'm really looking forward to having the truck in full driving order. (Hint: If anyone lives in New England and wants to help take on a challange with this, contact me!) Lawrence [email protected] 96 Disco - Beowulf - NH, USA |

Hello, I just purchased a used 99 Disco II coming from a 94' Jeep XJ with 6" lift and 33's. In regards to the EW, are they available through LR directly or do you have to purchase the EW through say Buyer's Choice? Thank you. |

LR dealerships will sell them to you but you need to see if yours qualifies for one through them. I snuck mine in right before the original warranty ran out and its already paid for itself when the transmission went bad 3000 miles later. Give your dealership a call and they will fill you in more on what they can do. Good luck Chris von C |

One caveat: If you fit larger tires, I don't know of any extended warranty that will cover you. Most extended warranty companies send out an inspector (including LR), and if they see larger tires, they automatically void the warranty. Actual odometer mileage is compromised. |

If your dealership is "off roader friendly" and realize that these trucks are used for that too, damage or failure due to non-approved mods will be out of your pocket but the whole warranty wont be shot. Chris von C |

Chris, I understand your point, which is true when you are in factory warranty, but the point is that the inspectors DO come out for extended warranties, and whether something is covered or not is out of the dealers' control... and the "off-road friendly" dealers won't even be able to do anything about it. The warranty inspectors are looking for any reason to deny coverage. |

Chris, fund your own and escape the stress when dealing with any EW company. As Al states, they are looking for ways to deny coverage. If you can turn your own wrench, which BTW is a good thing when offroad, take that route. If you are determined to purchase an EW, please consider calling me. I will sell you the "Ultra-Platinum-Gold-Executive" EW coverage for only $4800. It covers everything and the best thing is that when you call me for a claim, I will be nice when I tell you "NO, IT AIN'T COVERED". At least this way when you choose to get screwed, you will hear my soothing voice and my pleasant demeanor. Do we have a deal? |

No thanks Bruce I do hear what you guys are saying but the fact is, its not a global hardcore "deny, deny, deny" if you have the slightest mod on the truck. My own experiance with my truck backs that up. I bought the LR extended warranty back in June for $2800 and they already have replaced my entire transmission and 1/2 of my steering pump parts in the past month under the EW and my truck is very modified including oversized tires. They do stick to the law like "if it even remotely touches rubber parts, it dont get warrantied". They sold me the EW knowing how the truck was set up (since they did it to begin with) and as long as they honor the really big items, I am not going to complain. Chris von C |
