Last week Jo Matthews in the UK posted that he had completed bob tailling his DI, and I and some others asked for photos. Jo has been unable to post them so he sent me a couple so I thought I'd share. The fule tank now resides inside and makes up the floor of the cargo area. The paint was available off the shelf for the time being. Once all of his body mods are completed, he'll respray the entire vehicle one color. Looks great to me!

Yes it looks awesome. I thought of bobtailing a Disco even before we got one. I got the idea after seeing a RRC bobtailed in one of the first British magazines I bought years ago. I have been waiting for this project to get finished and love it. If we ever move back to Europe, I'm getting a 3 door.

OK...

I like the fact that it is shorter and all and that nothing back there is going to hit anything, but I do not think I will be keen on doing that to my Disco.

Dunno, I like the fact that it is a ´smallish` 4 door, V8, solid axled, 5 seater, offroader.

Naaaa....chop chop chop!!!

i like the "pick-up chop" alot better. that thing looks unbalenced to my eye.

maybe if it had a better approach angle and sat level and had bigger tires?

anyone wanna photo shop that pic ?

i agree musky. i even think if it were a bit longer in the ass (not bobbed as much) it would look more balanced.

though, once the front bumper is on it will decrease the front approach and might make it look a bit better. other than that anal detail i think it's a job well done.

Just curious, I wonder how much shorter is the wheel base on a 3 door disco 1, like the one in the photo before it was chopped compared a regular 5 door NAS version.

I believe all that was done was chop off some of the ass but the wheelbase was never touched. Actually, I'd be interested to see what the opposite would look like. Just move the wheelbase back a bit instead of chopping the back off....of course, this is probably definitely harder of the two things to do.

Yeah, wheel base is same for three door and five door models. I'm surprised no-one has ever had a three door body shipped over and put it on their NAS spec chassis. Would be really nice, and enlarging the wheel wells wouldn't be as tricky because there are no rear doors.

I also agree that the front is now too long proportion-wise. Clean up the front with a nicely tucked in bumper and winch, then level it out and it would be really nice.

It's not for me, but I'm not a Xtreme wheeler! My truck is known for it's big ass anyway.

Kinda of reminds me of a AMC Gremlin. Needs purple paint and Starsky and Hutch stripes.

I was about to comment on that as well Blue, it seems like every other bob-tail I have seen has done away with them, keeping them was a nice touch.

Pokerrob,
I also considered a less of a chop. I think that would look cool too. But I'd go either way on this.

Muskyman,
What is it with people wanting that rake to be level? I see people putting spacers on the front of the TJ coils just to level the Jeep out. Both the Jeep and the Disco come from the factory with a bit of a nose-down attitude and I like it. When you throw gear in the back it then levels out. if you start level, it ends up ass down and I think that's stupid and it hurts on hill climbs, especially on short wheelbase vehicles.

Greg,
That's why I like 3-doors. You can hack that rear fender for some real tires.

Overall, I like the look and the proportion. Shortened 5-door would be cool too. I'd like to put the rear folding, side-facing seats in the back instead of the bench and you have a light 5-door 4-seater where you can fold the seats and put some little cargo back there still.

milan,

because nose down gives you less castor and because lifting a disco without compensating alsp loses castor a nose down lifted disco makes me think down hill roll over!

but thats just my emperical eye giving me gut feedback....FWIW

Musky,
That's why I like to start high a bit in the back to level it out with the load. So the rake while driving should be level. I would probably still take .5-1" taller in the back. I don't think such small difference will impact the castor or downhill rollower possibility that much. But YMMV, that's why I like to hear as many opinions as possible on stuff like this.

Thanks.

Hey, cool scout in the other thread. I have a feeling I have seen some pics of it before. :)

Yeah but how much weight do you think he can actually fit into his newly reduced cargo area??? I don't have any way of knowing what kind of springs he is running but with my Rovertyms I loaded 5 235/85 BFG M/Ts mounted on steel wheels along with a bunch of recovery gear and tools into the back once and it only changed the ride height by just under 1/2 an inch (I measured it with a tape measure).

"Hey, cool scout in the other thread. I have a feeling I have seen some pics of it before.:)"
milan,
guess I'm kinda pulling a peter with my scout pics...lol

but when potential mods and stuff comes up outside the rover window makes sence to me to show that I'm not just spouting from webwheelin and reading but from bolting it on and beating it up.

Carter,
You are right. It very much depends on the springs. On the TJs I mentioned they're very soft, so you can't carry as much crap obviously without sagging the rear. On the bobbed Disco, I would go to lighter springs. I know he can't carry much if he has rear seats, but he should still be able to load few hun lbs in there if he doesn't.

Musky,
Nothing wrong with "outside" images. I, like you, like most 4x4s even if they're not J**P....ehm....I mean Land Rover. :) Best "factory" one I like is the Ibex.

damn... does it look ugly. even bobtailed rangie is ugly (even if more functional offroad), but disco beats it by far.

reminds me of my homeland's 4x4s...

Hey Peter,
Did you know that Lada Niva was really a licensed copy Fiat Riva. Just like the passenger car Lada was I think Fiat 132. I think Nivas/Rivas are cool.

Thom, you aren't a guy who'd be saying that a disco would outwheel anything on the earth :)

many people on this board are.

speaking of tire on a rock, i measured the travel of the bilsteins i had on the jeep. guess what, 6.5 inches :) it helps a lot that they are located inboard of the framerails.

now i know the main flaw of Bilsteins or any gas-charged shocks - less travel for the same compressed/extended length.
