OK, I think I've finally found the culprit of the spongy brakes on my '95 DI (still spongy after bleeding the system a couple of times) -- after parking the truck over Thanksgiving I came back to find a small puddle of brake fluid on the pavement under the master cylinder/servo unit. Had the little woman pump the brakes for me and saw a tiny bubble of brake fluid pop from below the rear reservoir seal every time the brakes were pumped. (Coincidentally, this spongy brake problem came up after I had the filthy brake fluid flushed out and replaced with Ate Super Blue brake fluid -- don't know if the new fluid caused the leak or if it's just coincidence.) I assume there is a replacement seal and/or repair kit available, but would I be better off replacing the whole master cylinder? Also, I was alarmed to see that the whole master cylinder/servo unit moves forward a fraction of an inch when the brakes are pumped -- is this normal? Thanks, Norm |
