The other day on the way to work the disco started vibrating pretty hard then all of a sudden I hear a loud pop then a thumping noise under the floor board. I lost all power in the disco and glided into a parking lot. The disco would NOT get into gear. I looked under and saw that I had blown a u-joint on the front drive shaft and the only thing keeping it off the ground was the cross member (explains the thumping). I got it towed home and checked the transmission, it was full but had little metal shavings on the drain plug. Can someone please advise what happened and why it won't get into gear? clutch? transmission box? thanks, Jon 96 disco 5-speed |

Have you tried engaging the diff lock and see if you now have drive? |

Just an FYI on the metal shavings, Jon. When I did the trans fluid in my 96 (auto) for the first time there was what I consider a significant amount of shavings on the plug. I flushed the fluid several times over the next couple months and pretty much eliminated the shavings. If you know your fluid was shaving-free prior to this event, I'd be more concerned. Otherwise, those shavings could be from just the normal wear since the last time you flushed the fluid. Lawrence [email protected] 96 Disco - Beowulf - NH, USA |

you did not say if your truck was auto or standard shift.let me guess std shift.when you lost that u joint something might have happened to your hydraulic clutch system.my 95 is a 5 speed and the first time i serviced it there was some metal on the drain plug.i bought veh 2nd hand and serviced just after purchase at 48000 miles.good luck. |
