With winter here has anyone put on an aftermarket alarm with starter? If so any difficulties with the factory anti-theft system? Dealer advised against it. Any information would be great. |

James, I did quite a bit of research on this and came to the conclusion of DEFINATLY NOT. Land Rover will not install it so that leaves us or a shop...ckt city etc... There is too much to interface with in the security system on the D2. I wouldn't trust a shop that only does alarms. You'll probably be their 1st Land Rover. As far as an aftermarket alarm and starter I would still advise against it. just my $.02 -Tony |

I'm just looking for an aftermarket unlocking system to replace the stock. I've lost a remote, and the other one I have doesn't work. Land Rover wants a fortune to replace and reprogram my current system. Any thoughts? |

Thanks Tony. I figured the same thing, and I have never come across any one who has had it done. |

I have done many of these and there is nothing to them. all it is a a relay pack (3) that turns on the acc. ign. and starter functions of your car. Rover (like many other car makers) have a passive starter interupt. I havn't checked but it will be somthing imbedded in the key most likley a resistor. if so you just find the value of the resistor and put it in line with you ign. wire. Some manufactures use a small computerchip. If this is the case them you need a second harness wired in with the ign. wire and a spare key. Also you need to find the factory disarm wire. Not as easy as a honda but no different then any other car with a passive interupt system. You will pay more for the install but any reputable place can do it for you. even circuit city if thats all that is around. Hell if you are in SoCal I'll do it for you!! |

My 2001 DII doesn't have any passive (key) starter interrupt. I use regular locksmith made keys ($4.00/ea) and they work fine. My wife's 2001 Ford Windstar has a transponder in the key and they want almost $100 for new keys. -Tommy |

Yep - ez w/o transponder key. I've installed alarms & remote starters in other cars I've owned... but none of them had factory security systems, so it was very easy - starting from scratch. I've never done a remote start in a vehicle w/ factory alarm... I'd hate to screw something up. I checked with a few of the local stereo/alarm shops (including bestbuy, circuit city), and they want a fortune to do it. You can never get that '$100 installed' deal they advertise with a rover. -Tommy |

What is needed is the remote starter as well as a box that allows you to bypass the immobilizer. The remote starter will not work by itself as you need both modules. |
