My 99 D II has headlights that stay on whenever the transmission is in any gear other than Park AND whenever the regular headlights are NOT on. These daytime running lights are fairly dim, but seem to emanate from the high beam filament. When I switch on the headlights, the bulb glows MUCH brighter & reverts to high or low beam, according to my preference. How is this daytime running light circuit wired? If the high beam filament is always energized during the day, adding a relay into the circuit (for less voltage drop) might result in the headlights being on all the time, even during the day.

Are you in Canada? U.S. spec vehicals don't do this. In any event it is a programable feature and the dealer can turn it off for you no need to wire a relay. If you wanted to you could isolate the circuit with a relay though. depending on which filiment is lit (hi/low) cut that wire so that the circuit is open Put one at 30 on the relay and the other at 87 or 87a I foget which is which (you want the TOP ONE not the middle) then 85 to ground and 86 to light switch. Depending on how the 12v out for the light works you may need to put both hi and low to the 86 spot. If you do then you would have to isolate them with a diode. That should work

Could it be using the 3w city light? Or have you actually noticed that the DRL lighting up the Hi-Beam filament?

I'm not sure what filament powers the daytime running lamps, but I had mine activated when I bought my 99 D2. I can confirm that this is an option that can be controlled by testbook. I live in Albany, NY and we get lots of snow, fog and crappy weather and just thought the daytime running lamps were a good idea. I also have two boys so safer the better. I also get a break on my insurance for having them on.

I finally consulted the CD shop manual (from Chris Urquieta). This DII was originally delivered to a dealer near the Canadian border. The daylight running lamp option sends current through fuse #5 to a resistor in the engine compartment, dropping the voltage to 6.7V. From there it returns to the fuseblock, and out through the regular fuses to the main beam filaments. The daytime running light option may be defeated by removing fuse #5, if desired.

I looked at mine and I have a fuse in that position(5). and the manual says that it is for daytime lights but mine do not work. So while what you suggest will work for your application for sombody that wants to go the other way around they would have to preform the test book procedure. Glad to here it was a easy fix for you.

That option does have to be turned on by the dealer in the ECU. If you have the fuse, chances are it will work, the software just has to know to use it.
