Hey guys, I've got a '96 Disco SE with 76k on the odometer. I've recently (at 70k) changed all my O2 sensors, spark plugs, ignition wires, all filters and a couple of other various parts. The "Check Engine" light fired up and when I pulled out my little OBD-II kit, codes 300 and 420 popped up. I know that 300 is Misfire on Multiple Cylinder and 420 is Catalyst Efficiency Low Fault Bank A, but what, exactly, do I need to do now? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot,

Brian

Brian,

Did you do the work or have a shop do it? In either case, did you or the installer apply the recommended "anti-seize" to the sensors? Did any "anti-seize" get on one of the post-cat sensors? (I assume you've got a late '96 with the post-cat sensors (otherwise the code makes no sense)).

Otherwise maybe the cat is bad, with 70K get it into the dealer soonest and have them check and replace (if necessary) since it's under warranty.

Eric -
For reading the OBD-II codes, I use my laptop and software purchased from www.obd-2.com -- it's $122 and does the job quite well. I highly recommend it.

Carl -
I did the work myself, taking extra care not to get anti-seize on the sensors, so I am quite sure that's not the problem. I'll be talking to my local dealer within the next couple of days about having the cats looked at and, hopefully, replaced. A couple of other avenues I am pursuing are cleaning theIntake Air Control Valve (aka Stepper Motor) and running some injector cleaner in the fuel. We'll see.

FWIW, the 0300 probably caused the 0420. Did it reset or continue to fail ?

Hey Brian, either one of the sensors is bad or something went wrong with the tune up work. 2 crossed plug wires will cause this buy sending too many HCs down the pipe and the o2 sensor picks it up and can't lean out the mixture enough to fix it so it throws an o2 code. You need to have the sensors put on a scope and have the ignition waveforms to see whats going on. New sensors are known to be bad right out of the box. New means "new". New does not mean "good".

Hope that helps some.
