I test drove a new 2003 Disco S today - many thanks to Garrett at Seattle LR - he hangs out here at this forum. He showed me all the Disco tricks and features and let me have a nice long test drive. He also let me get out when we were parked at about a 45 degree side angle to inspect the articulation - my 10 year old son in the back seat was wide-eyed, but intrigued. Garrett confirmed that the center diff lock is inoperative on USA spec Discoveries. The linkage decal indicates that you can shift the transfer case lever to the left to lock the diff, but the lever won't actually move. He said that the linkage is different from European Discos. Can anyone confirm this? Has anyone investigated to see if the USA linkage can be replaced with a European linkage, so that you can lock the diff without having to install an aftermarket system? WOuld the cost be prohibitive? Thanx. |

I think the verdict is "No". |

Ya, and it's really stupid. Traction control is AWESOME, look at what a Freelander can do in the mud, but what happens if you are out in the bush and the computer takes a dump? Most of the places I go are questionable for getting back to the road without a diff-lock. Although, for some reason I have this affinity about using it, "Oh, I guess I better use the diff-lock. Dang." http://landrover.mrbaileyshistory.net |
