sorry...but this is really worrying me..its been in the high 20's low 30's here in northern ATL, Ga. and i'm just worried cuz when my car finally does get in the optimum temp. area...it won't stay there cuz anything from 50mph and really 65mph and up makes the engine gradually get colder over about 3-4 minutes...
i'm worried because i know that they run these things in colder climates....if my temp instrument is the problem...what will be things that would happen with a bad temp. reading...
also, i don't think it is wrong...because it is slow and gradual like its just gettin' cold @ higher speeds....help
anybody who's had the same probs...please drop a line...
thanks
jess

feel free to e-mail me...this has just really been botherin' me...

Jess, have you replaced your thermostat? It is quick and painless to do so if you havnen't and most likely there lies your problem. i had pulled my t-stat out completely back around July and just put in a new one a couple of days ago. Drove from Knoxville, TN to Asheville,NC and the temp gauge didn't move from the low side of cold the whole 140 miles. Only way I could get some heat was to completely shut off the vent and turn the temp to cold. After a few minutes, it would rise up then I could blast some heat before it dropped back down. Anyhow.. Replaced the t-stat soon as I got home. Hope that helps ya.. Later.. Rob

Hi, Jess.

My 96 Disco is also cold-blooded. I'm going into my thrid winter with it and have replaced the t-stat twice with no effect. Driving in my local community (45mph or less) and keeping the heater blowing on setting one or two, it will warm up nicely - but slowly. If I get up on the highway (65mph) and / or turn the blower up to full, then the truck will slowly cool down until it's not blowing warm air at all.

I can mitigate this a little bit by hitting the Air-Recirculation button, and keeping the blower at no more than the third setting, but then sometimes you have an issue with too much moisture building up in the recirculated air and the rear side windows begin to fog. I've been looking for a nice, secure cover to put in front of my bumper (they make these for Defenders, but can't find one for a Disco?!?!). That would probably help significantly as well.

The t-stats I put in were "generics" from NAPA based on their cross-ref book. Has anyone had better luck with one brand or another? I prefer cold to hot, and personally don't worry too much about the heat (or lack of), but the cold-blooded-nature is my wife's only complaint (not counting gas-milage of course). More importantly, we have our first munchkin arriving in Feb and the Disco will be our primary vehicle for baby-hauling. Having a vehicle that's cold enough to see your breath even after driving 30 minutes is not the best place for a newborn.
