Here's my problem... got a 95 disco that just started doing this last week and so far been unable to diagnose.

When I start the vehicle in the morning I will here a bit of a whine/groan and idle roughly. The sound fluctuates with the idle. It's barely noticeable when in park, but as soon as I slap it into gear the groan is pretty loud and the idle becomes more eratic.

Once I'm up and driving the sound goes away and will only reappear when I'm stopped. At this point the idle becomes more stable but still fluctuates slightly.

I have attempted to have someone else start it and put it into gear so I can poke around the vehicle to find out where the noise is, but of course it doesn't occur when I do this. It's not real consistent at this point. I know it will happen, but the degree to which it is happening varies greatly.

Anyone ever run across this or able to point me towards the possible culprit?

Did you do anything to the vehicle immediately prior to your problem?

Nothing.... just started making the noise...
In that last week I've done some tuneup stuff...but nothing has changed on the rig. New wires/plugs, cleaned stepper motor, new fuel filter. I'm hoping to break away from the office at a decent hour this week to crawl around it and atleast pinpoint where the noise is coming from.

95 Discos use ATF in the power steering

yep... power steering reservoir is full....

of course with it only occuring when in gear....i can't throw it in park and check it when i hear it, but it sounds like it is coming from the passenger side. my wife hopped in one day and when it started she thought it was coming from directly under the passenger seat.

i'll do some more checking on it tonight.

My 95 whines when it is cold outside at start up (40 deg and less). As soon as the temp guage starts to climb, it goes away. It will whine louder when I turn the steering wheel.

Didn't really think of it until you mentioned cold weather. It did just start getting cold (below 32) for a number of straight days here. I think we had a warm winter last year, so I never had a problem.

It is pretty rough right when it starts up and calms down after it's warmed up for a bit. So it would seem to fit the symptoms of the cold weather mentioned above.

The odd thing is that the whine still occurs when I'm stopped. It doesn't always do it, and when it does it varies in how loud it groans.

I have noticed a slight whine when I start my rig too. It only happens when I start it in the cold (30ish). Hmmm...
