-97 disco sd- Here's my story, maybe someone can point me in a good direction. I will list the conditions and follow up with comments and questions. 1. dashlights go out - totally gone no blinkers no backlighting. 2. later, on the same day, ABS light turns on, I'm starting to think,"I guess I know what I'll be doing this weekend." I get where I'm going then turn disco off and remove key as usual. 3. later, I get back in the disco, start it up and can't shift out of park, now I'm really puzzled. So I turn the key on and off quickly three times to hopefully reset the system. Still can't get it out of park. HUM... 4. then I can't even remove the key from the switch. I was on my lunch break. I had my gerber multi-tool and a set of sockets. 5. The first thing I did was check fuses. I checked the main fuses by the battery and the fuses under the steering column (left hand drive). All of those fuses are good. Are there any more fuses anywhere else that I may have missed? 6. Then I disconnected the battery for 15 min. hooked it back up. still no luck. 7. I am now in "tear in to it" mode. I take apart the column to tacke the key issue first. I finally find the solenoid to manually throw and can now remove the key. 8. I take the console out and find the solenoid to throw to shift out of park. 9. I limp home hoping for no problems. So this is where I stand now. One thing to add to this is that I was pulling a trailer that had broken tail lights. So there possibly could have been a short getting back in to the rover through the trailer harness when I was braking or signaling. I had this trailer on my disco for about four days. If the problem lies in the brake switch, I find it funny that the dash lights went out. While I was taking it apart I was checking as many connections as possible, wiggling this and that. Basic troubleshooting. I think something in the curcuit that controls the -brake pressed, key on, shift in to drive- stuff went bad. Some condition in that curcuit is not being met. Anyone else have this pleasant experience? What ended up being the problem? Please post part numbers, cost, if convenient. Please don't go out of your way, though. Thank you very much! |

in my 95, the abs light came on, and about 2 weeks later the brake switch went, so I couldn't get it out of park. bought a new brake switch (i think it was like $30?) and that fixed the not coming out of park problem. The service manager at the dealership said that the abs light can come on because of the bad brake switch, and that it was just a matter of erasing the fault off the memory. I know the abs works b/c i'm in NC, and with the ice storm we just had, the abs got a hearty workout. the key thing, i'm not sure about. but i would just go and replace the brake switch, and not worry about the abs light...i think everybody's on here stays on. |

There is a fuse under the steering column. It is on the main circuit second from the bottom I believe. Check those. I am betting a fuse. Same thing happened to me trailer and all. Changed the brake switch same problem. A Rover tech had me check the fuses. Low and behold that was it. |

The dash lights are on the same cct as the right hand side lights ( it is on mine anyway ). Unrelated to your problem was I had the dash lights go out when I used the rear wiper. A coupla days later I couldn't find a short in the cct and finaly put two and two together. I only use the wiper when it rains!! Sure enough the right rear bumper sidelight didn't have the rubber boot installed in the connector properly so water was getting in and shorting it out. Oz Disco's dont have all the park lock/brake shit so I can't help you there. Aren't they fun Bruce. |

I had the same problem minus the dashlights and it was the brake switch. (the abs light did come on just before as well) |

Thanks to all for the responses. I'll check the fuses again. I'm am hoping it's the brake switch, because I went out there tonight and stomped on the brake, no brake lights. I was unaware of this before. Someday I'm going to gut the electronics on this thing, wire it myself, and wheel the piss out of it. Thanks. |

Yes it's the brake switch. I have the exact same prob. minus the dash lights going out. Here's a part no: AMR 2020 TRW referred to as a "stop lamp switch" (funny brits aren't they?) at about $40US. Happy trails! |
