All the engines are going to come from the UK, unless you go with a rebuilder.

I'm not sure that I would buy an engine from a salvage yard. Try calling roversdownsouth.com or discountrovers.com?

ECR will sell you a long block for $6000, or RPI will sell for GBP 2495.

I have put countless boneyard engines into cars at various times. So far, every one has performed well (except for the one in my sister's car-you just got to put coolant in them!). I deal regularly with several boneyards doing engine swaps about once a month. All of the boneyards I deal with have a minimum of a 30 day warranty, if you have a shop.

The boneyard Rover engines I've seen probably have more damage done at the boneyard in removing them than they could ever have in the truck! I occasionally see Rover engines with parts missing and torch evidence! Then, you find they used a sawz-all and not only chopped up the wiring harness you really needed bits from, or they torched the downpipes off that you wanted to use to make a catcon pipe...

I found one engine that even had the Rover service history with it, including the nifty little stamps from the dealer. THAT one was expensive!

Bottom line, if you find a boneyard you trust, trust 'em!

I could have three boneyard Rover engines tonight if I need them.

Well, the conversion rate is approx. x1.5 so that would put the RPI as the best deal by far (c. US$3750). I am sure there will be lots of taxes/shipping/etc., but it certainly won't be more that the $2250 difference.

Muskyman - amazing, following that link they were mostly asking $5795! So you could get a new engine from RPI for less!

lol...well I dont set the prices:)

but what years of pick and pull scrounging have taught me is "dont believe the published price"

call them say HI i understand you have a 4.6 rover motor I have $1500 or what ever you want to pay. and lets deal...they almost always come down

i just bought a pair of disco axels for $500 they had them listed for $1200 a piece.

its supply and demand and rover parts dont jump off the shelf in east iowa, so spend some time and you will find what you are looking for at a price that will make you happy.

i would be REALLY surprised if you could do better across the pond then here with all the freight and all.

I found a pretty reasonble deal at a place called RoverCannibal. $2600 for a rebuilt 4.6 with a performance cam and some other nick-nacks for $2600. It also comes with a 1 year unlimited mile warranty.
Anybody dealt with them before?

Hell, I'll come right out and say it, I do not wish to deal with Rover Cannibal!

Go ahead, call them and after you've been put on hold for the third time, you decide if you wish to do business with them...

To answer your question Jay, no, I have not done business with them as they always seem to be too busy to do business with me.

Peace,
Paul

There's one in New Orleans called Rovers Down South. I believe they sell rebuilt motors.

Has anyone ever shipped from RPI to USA an engine and if so what did it cost?

IMHO I imagine it would be a shitload. I was gonna get some stuff from the UK but the shipping doubled the price. I can't imagine what a motor would cost to ship not to mention duties and whatever else youwould have to pay.

Just bought a 4.0 engine from roverlandparts.com in florida, had 19k on it for 1950.00 / price included shipping to san jose, ca., any purchase over 50 dollars and shipping is free, might be worth a look, very easy to deal with.

Jay,
Check with Bobby Thrash at http://www.strictly-german.com/sg_Contact.asp He has begun dismantling Land Rovers during the past year. Also, I have used a machine shop in north Georgia very familiar with the rover v8, but I cannot recall the name. I'll post it when I find it again.

Emailed RPI about cost of shipping engines:

Q: in your experience, whats the cost or range of costs to
ship a complete v8 to the USA?

A: Thank you for your recent enquiry. To ship a long (strip) engine the cost to the nearest airport is approximately £250.00. This price includes insurance but excludes any duties/customs charges.

I don't think thats too bad. Customs is likely 10% I think

That sounds pretty reasonable for shipping. Enginers aren't exactly light, and it costs quite a lot just to ship from East Coast to West Coast domestically.

I was just quoted $8,500 + whatever labor by the local dealership for a new 4.0 engine for my 96 Discovery!!

I found a place, not the dealership, that will install a used 4.0 with 60,000 miles on it for $4500 incl. labor.

Is this reasonable what should I look for or questions I should ask? I know NOTHING about engines. I DO know that the second I drive this pile of shit, cylinder sleeve dropping, block cracking, money eating, headache inflicting Land Rover out of the shop, it's getting traded for something other than a "Rovie"

Thanks in advance.

I think you can do better than $4500 for a 4.0 with 60k. That is not a particularly long-miled engine (though better than the 3.9).

I would say that if you are disgusted and determined to sell, you will probably not recoup the investment of dropping in a good engine.

Why anyone would go to the dealership for a new engine is beyond me.

I went to the dealership with a need for a new engine, dealer offered two options, new out of the crate for 6750.00, or used with 50k for 3450.00, I told them I would take a look around, found the one in the above post with 19k for 1950 shipped for free to the dealer, service advisor was honest in saying if I wanted to save $ I could order parts (hoses, seals, belt, mounts) and have them sent to him, they provided all the labor, probably the best experience I've had with a mechanic or dealer

I'm intrigued and shocked and confused here. Why the hell are people having to put NEW engines in these things?!!!! A vehicle that touts itself as so rugged and off roadsy seems to break down aaaa lot!!!

MAJOR break down, new engines? Give me a break, these SUV's are expensive!

This sounds like Dateline or 60 minutes or someone should blow a whistle on Land Rover.

Ridiculous!
Andy.

You are confused Andy. The question is...good source for new 4.6 engines.

There is nothing wrong with not knowing anything about engines. Just go lease a new car and you won't have to think about Land Rovers any more.

Your dealer could sell you new 4.0 short block for $1200 standard install is ~20hours x $80/hour plus new gaskets etc etc $3500 out the door or so.

Tell them to use a Disco II 4.0 short block.

If your head(or heads) are toast the price goes up dramatically as heads or a long block is $$$$$

there is a place in australia that has engines of all sorts/sizes.unsure if there would be any compliance problems but with the exchange rate on the us dollar to the aust dollar i think they would be pretty cheap.there website can be found with a search for triumphroverspares.they also specialise in performance mods and parts.nice site worth a look.would have posted the shortcut but dont no how.

Even though I find the 4 Runner commercials appealing, and the tag team Toyota salesmen a delight to deal with...I'm going with the Ford Model T myself.
