I am considering buying a Discovery II. I have never owned a Land Rover before, and would like to know the average mileage you can get out of these before it's ready to be traded off. I know Honda's, Toyota's, and other imports do very well in holding their own as far as mileage goes. I am a mechanic, so my Land Rover will be maintained. What can I expect?

Well, I've got about 50k on the odometer and haven't had a problem. (knock on wood)

If you know how to maintain it, you should be able to get a very long life out of it.

Joe,

I bought my D2 with the goal of keeping it a minimum of 10 years. Yes, it is a daily driver.

The DII should last at least as long as a DI. You will see if you comb through this board that a lot of guys run their D1's for 200,000 miles and more. The problem with these trucks is not how long they last -- they are built like tanks and you could probably go a half million miles in em. The problem is the niggly stuff, especially electrical. The niggly stuff seems to be more of a problem in the first 50,000 miles and seems to settle down after that.

No Land Rover will ever be as reliable as a Toyota, but Toyotas are kind of light weight and look pretty worn out after 150,000 miles. A Rover will need more attention, but will be more solid after lots of miles. If you're a mechanic, and don't mind tinkering with the little stuff, the Disco should be a good choice for you. They have weak points like rotoflexes and valve guides, and be damn sure not to overheat it, but you should be able to manage.

Hope that helps.

well, because i recon that the trailer isn't made by toyota, that's why the baby one is ret-ta-go with the little a-frame trailer queen thingy in the front :)

I was gonna comment on how the cute little one should be moved forward for more tongue weight, but then I remembered that a Toyota doesn't weigh more than a couple of pounds anyway...

Oh Boy's you know what the real reason is don't you....because I couldn't trust my D2 to make it to Alabama and back to PA pulling that little blue pixie. :) Scotty boy, can you calculate the tongue weight here:

Wow, you couldn't tell from the original pic, but it is far up... that's one hell of a tongue though, the little blue guy isn't even tailgating.

"but Toyotas are kind of light weight and look pretty worn out after 150,000 miles."

Doesn't sound like you've driven too many Toyotas.

PS.

1,two FJ60s

Both 1987s, both have around 215,000 miles, both are driven every day. Having known both previous owners, the list of what has been replace or fixed on these two trucks can be counted on fingers only, no toes needed.

Had to give you some back-up, Todd.

I'll take (and need) all the help I can get. Nice pair of 60's, Enoch.

Scotto, I guess the first shot angle was a bit deceiving. Anywho, that long tongue really makes the trailer tow like a wet dream. Very stable even at speeds of 70 - 75. Thats about all I would be comfortable doing with the weight of the 40 on it, even though it has electronic brakes all the way around.

Have to back up my fellow 60 owners here too, mine is an '86 and a baby with only 120,000 miles. The only thing I have replaced is the stock suspension with OME. I have my eye on a 2003 Disco though ;-)
