Okay, time for a dumb question. I just bought a 1996 Discovery SD, with a stick and a 4.0 V8. US model. Is it a I or a II? No II badge on the back, nor any indication on the manufacturers plate. Help much appreciated! Also- any ideas on my post as to more power? Cheers! Paul. |

Paul, What you have is a Series I. The Series II began in 99. The II's have diffrent engines and are longer and a bit wider. You can tell the I and the II's apart easily by the tail lights. On II's the tail lights are low (just above the bumper). While on II's they are half way up the back. Look at a few of the members photos and you'll see some I's and II's. |

I think Al meant to say on the D1's the tail lights are low, just above bumper while D2's have lights that are half-way up the back pillars. Yes Al?? |

I didn't know that they are wider. If they are how do you explain that the D2 roof rack will still fit a D1? |

Thanks guys! I really love this thing- it rules! I live in the Blue Mountains of northeast Oregon- hope to get some real snow soon to put her through her paces! Any ideas on more power? Cheers, Paul. |

Yeah, about 3" wider. I think it tapers more than a D1 and the roof is a touch wider I believe, less than 1". |

Roof is not wider on a D2, 6" longer yes, but not wider. Another easy indicator of the D2 is that it has "normal" external door handles rather than the reach in lever kind on the D1. The D2 also has fender flairs and a wider wheel base and stance. The side markers on the D2 are larger also. All of these are just visual outside cues one can pick up on. Tail lights are the easiest indications but only help from the back. I find looking for the door handles fromt he front or side is the best spotting method from that view. |

The track is wider because they switched to the Rangie style axles. About 3"-4" I think. Plus, all US DII's came with the black fender flares, whereas the DI's did not(although some have had them added). |

Danno, Actually the D2's came out in late 1998 as a 1999 model. I picked my D2 up from a dealer lot in April 1999 and it was sitting on the lot for a few months already. The D1's and D2's were sold side by side in 1999. |

Does anybody know if the chassis changed between the D1 & D2? I'm looking to put a new chassis under my '74 2 door Rangie body and I have heard that at least the D1 chassis is the same as mine. Greg, you think the D2 has wider axles from the RR? |

From the front you can also tell by the grille and headlights - they lights dont taper on the DII and the grill is bolder. The DII is wider in the wheel base. Yep they have the solid axils as well. The Chassis on the DII is physically larger and the trailing arms on the rear and bigger and no longer tube like. Cheers |

I thought the RRC, D2 and D1 had the same wheel base. But the track on the D2 was wider. |

The 100" wheelbase chassis on the non-LWB clasic Rangie and all Series 1 Discos are practically identical. The bodies are obviously different, as are much of the electricals and brakes. The non air-sprung Classic Rangies have a self-leveling unit at the rear a-frame, otherwise, their suspension is also identical to the Series 1 Disco. Most of the Springs, shocks, bushings, a-arms, etc. are interchangeable between the 87-93 coil-sprung Rangies and 94-99 series 1 Discos. Although the D2 has the same 100" wheelbase, it is a different animal underneath. The chassis rails go back farther to accomodate the extra 7" behind the rear seat. The radius arms are longer and mount differently to the chassis (as do the swaybars) and they are forged steel I-beam configuration (anyone manage to bend one yet?). The rear suspension has replaced the a-arm central pivot with a Watts Linkage setup which is reported to give better on-road handling (I can vouch for that) with as good , or better off-road articulation (still working on that test). Basically, ir you want to replace your 74 Rangie (Velar?) chassis, go for the 94-99 Disco unit. The axles on the D2 are wider, "modified"Range Rover units (i.e. the diffs are on the right, instead of on the left as in the 96-03 Range Rovers).Thewider track actually gives the "bigger" D2 a tiighter turning radius than the D1 (though not much). |
