first of all....why don't we ever speak of Eaton's lockers...all models of them?

my other questions is what is everybody's opinion on the new detroit electrac?

what are the ups and downs of electric actuated lockers?

thanks,
jess

i have this thing for not getting an ARB air locker....no matter what anybody tells me..i just don't want the air....
are the electrics any good?

lastly, i do understand the ups to having a locker that can be unlocked....unlike the detroit...which is always locked and only unlocks when the hubs turn in opposite directions...
thanks again

I think it's because they don't have applications for our vehicles.

????

That's the most radical description on how the Detroit works I've ever heard.

OK, Jess, as far as other vehicles and their parts go - Eaton's better than GovLok, but worse than TracLoc. All of them suck. If you want a limited slip, get a TruTrac - very good torque bias, and no clutches to wear.

Electric locker (if one exists) would suck as well, because it is more difficult to create a solenoid with some decent push/pull than it is to make an air cylinder. Both suck, so get yourself a cable-operated Ox.

Eaton does not make an electric locker for anything other than GM axles yet. I'd venture a guess they are very good, though, as this is the locker that's used on many heavy trucks and seems to have a good reliability record.

Electrac I like even better as it is a worm gear limited slip when open, so you get the best of both worlds. I know they're being advertised for sale but I have yet to see one for a Jeep even, let alone for a LR. Time will tell how good they really are but if the current TrueTrac or Detroit are any indication, I'm sure I'll just get one and not worry about it.

I won't get into the ARB vs other locker debate but just 3 weeks ago I saw one push oil past the pinion seal. They need too much pressure. Electric solenoid actuation seems so much simpler.

"first of all....why don't we ever speak of Eaton's lockers...all models of them?"

I think Greg is right. Why spend all day talking about a locker that isn't even available for our vehicles? Talking all day about stuff that is currently available is bad enough.

i didn't know that eaton's weren't available for the disco...i was just readin' a four wheeler magazine and noticed that i've never heard anything on this board about them...

also, i'm sorry about the not-so-good explanation on the detroit locker...but that is what i read online here..somebody else posted that..please do explain the workings of it in further detail cuz i would like to know...

also the electrac seems to be able to be put in the front and the rear diff......
you can't do that with the arb locker or the detroit locker....right?

thanks again guys!

You can put an ARB in the front. You wouldn't want to do that with a Detroit though unless you are trailering your truck.

As for the locking true trac locker. I doubt that you will see one for Land Rovers based on how it works. The electric locking part is installed on to the diff cover. Our diff covers are welded on so they are part of the housing. Jeeps and such are bolted on. So unless they figure out a way to put the locking electrics and the ring that it uses into the third member you would be looking at one hell of a PITA to install.

The ARB is an open diff until you press the button which makes it fine for use up front. You could also just get a true trac for the front too. It's not a full locker though but, it's better then an open diff.
