My check engine light recently came on in my '96 LR. I took it to a local foreign car shop who works on LR's the scanner read 02 sensor, bank 1...I'm entirely unmechanically inclined so to me that's like Japanese. The man who scanned it felt comfortable turning it off and seeing what happens as he just performed my 90K service a couple weeks ago...Do you think it's o.k. just to turn off and see what happens or should I have it checked elsewhere? |

By "turning it off" I expect you mean he reset the unit and cleared the error code. If so, that makes sense to me - see if the error occurs again, and then do something about it. If the computer senses an O2 sensor failure it will run rich to avoid damaging the engine, so your mileage might go down (and emissions up) but its failsafe mode is to avoid possible engine damage from running too lean. |

I did mean he "reset it." The check engine light became illuminated before a few months ago - the code was '02 sensor, bank 1' then as well - and it was reset then. However, they did not detect anything which would've prompted it at the 90K check a couple weeks ago. So, I suppose I'll keep my fingers crossed it does not illuminate again. Thanks for the info. |

K.C., if your 96 is running w/ it's original sensors, then it's probably really going. I went thru the same process of reset-and-hope with my 96 (106k miles) and it's recently come back on and stays on, so it's going to be time to replace. I'm just not ready to put out that money right now (those little things are expensive!) since I need to do some rear brake work already, on top of holiday spending. I don't know how long it's "safe" to run with a bad sensor, however, so it is up high on my list. Lawrence [email protected] 96 Disco - Beowulf - NH, USA |

Do you know about how much new 02 sensors cost? Might be a dumb question, but what do the 02 sensor's do? Why are they impt? |

Just remember, folks, get in touch with Nathan at discountrovers.com for those O2 sensors -- at about 1/4 of dealer's cost for the same thing. A number of us here, myself included, can vouch for him. Brian |
