I've got a Safari Gard D1 no skid bumper that is going to be back from powder coating and ready for action next week. I was going to have them throw it on, but they can't do that till after the 1st of the year. To their credit they completed the bumper in half the time estimate. They're only half and hour or so away so I think I'll just go pick it up and try to throw it on myself. It seems like it should be simple... is it? I also have a warn xd9000i aka lil smoker to throw on. Is that relatively simple as well? The only reason I really wanted $G to do it was so that they would stand behind it 100%. I figure I can handle this. Suggestions? What's the story on grill trimming for the winch?
thx.
oh, and please, no bumper propoganda, I've already bought this bumper. It's what I wanted and I've got it, so I aint gettin anything else.

Personally, I wouldn't try to throw the bumper on. The likelihood of you throwing a bumper at your truck and having it land perfectly in place is not very good. And you may damage your vehicle too. :)

The $G bumper is easy to install especially without the skid. On mine the skid plate didn't line up very well, so that part was a little difficult. Just make sure that you use some new 1/2" bolts instead of the original bolts.

With the XD9000i smoker, you'll probably have to do a fair amount of cutting of the grill because of the integrated solenoid. I just used a air cutoff tool.

How much was $G going to charge?

Thanks Mike.
by 1/2" bolts I assume you mean those that actually fix it to the frame ends? Should I buy some high grade stainless or some such?

does the bumper have a basic winch tray into which the warn just bolts down?

$G wanted 150 to put the bumper (no winch) on. Probably better off just having that money in my pocket.

When I attempted removing my front bumper for a trip before, there were a few little metal brakets and such hanging down and I put the bumper back on, fearing damage to those. Do these just get sawed off with the $G?

I'm betting a lot of this will become very obvious with bumper, winch and stripped disco front end in front of me.

thanks for your help

As Mike Rupp said it should be fairly easy without the skid. With the skid on a D2 it was easy once we ground down parts of the new bumper, redrilled some holes that didn't line up on the skid, hammered and swore at it a few times but after all that it bolted up just fine. Without the skid you'll just need to use new grade 8 bolts and cut for the winch. And I'm not sure on the D1 but you may have to relocate the water bottle.

Yes, like Al said, get grade 8 or 5 bolts 1/2" x 4.5" (If I remember correctly). As far as removing the old bumper, you'll have to disconnect the headlight washer lines and block it off before the T fitting. The rest is pretty intuitive; just remove all bolts connecting original to the frame/body and yank it off.
The washer bottle stays put.

The winch should drop into the tray and just bolt in. That's if they measured properly. Mine wasn't! You'll have to eye it as far as trimming goes.

The $150 is better off in your pocket. Not a great value. I'm guessing that it shouldn't take more than 1.5 hours including mounting the winch.

Mike,
what did you do with your short winch tray?
did you just work with it or take the bumper back to $G?

1.5 hrs eh? hmmmm.... let's see... it only took me about 15 hrs to wire 4 hella 4ks and a work lamp to my roof rack so...

I had to open up the holes in the tray a small amount to get it to fit in the tray. They said that they had test fit my model winch, but I doubt it.

It is easy just get a friend (two preferably) to help as it is heavy. It can be done alone but I would not recommend it. I am not sure about the smoker but with a husky the winch has to be in the bumper when it is installed.

jack,

you might want to use 9/16" bolts where the bumper meets the frame, 1/2" bolts tend to be a little sloppy and no matter how tight you get them, you bumper will shift and twist when winching or strapping. i've got the fender scrapes to prove it. besides the larger cap screws look cool to.
