Rudd chains work very well and are easy to get on and off. Look for the Grip4x4 chains.

Bill Burke has a thing on them too that you may want to take a look at. Lots of good information.

Chris,
I've found that ice breakers on the front and heavy duty chains on the rear works best. Forgive me if I am telling you what you already know, but ice breakers are the type with little bars welded onto the chain links- they really do help on the steering wheels. The heavy duty type are better on the rear- but the important thing is to make sure they are tight. I generally put them on, drive a ways, then tighten the living s**t out of them- some have a latch that will take a srewdriver head- which when a wrench is put on the shaft will get them really tight. Don't rely on those little rubber dibbles to help much, and if you get long ends, carabiner them off. Now you can get REALLY stuck!
Cheers!
Paul.

I've found it helps to take stout bungi cords and wind them through the chain links on the outside of your tire, criss-crossing the rim. They sell you the rubber ring with hooks, but it doesn't last long on the trail. The crossed bungis will last a while.
But definitely as the last post said, you have to stop and tighten the heck out of them after a few yards of driving. Then add the bungis.
A loose chain will eat a fender pretty quickly.

Chains Alan???? I'm all about duct tape and extension cords.

-On a serious note, I wish there was enough snow down here to necessitate chains.

Im with you on that Carter.

Here in KC we have yet to see any. Being cold as shit without any snow to play in just sucks. Either needs to snow 12" or be 55-60 and sunny... LoL

Ill keep dreaming...

Believe it or not, no snow up here either. It's been so warm lately that all the snow melted. Not good for farmers.

Yeha, pretty wierd year this year, ain't it Alan? But I sure don't mind. Besides our biggest dumps always come in Jan and Mar.

Hey Milan. Ya, it's a little weird for me. I don't know if it's ever been like this in Calgary with all your chinooks but in Edmonton, there's always snow by mid-November. Usually you can count on snow by Halloween, if not earlier. A part of me doesn't mind but I kinda want some snow to play in. In fact, it'd be perfect if temps stay as they are and it just snows like crazy. :) But ya, watch out January.

As much as I live driving in the snow, I would not mind AZ, No CA type of weather for few years in a row. These 3 week summers and 8 months winters are getting to me. :)

Like they say, 10 months of winter and 2 months of bad sledding...

To be honest with you I like the winter months. No vehicle sucking bogs or major cleanups the next day.

The RUD chains look a little on the light side (link wise). I'm not sure how much force they could take before breaking. A smaller link will also be less effective than a larger one.

Hey Kevin,
Did you get my email?

Yes I did but a little late. I didn't get back into Calgary until Sunday. I've been in Houston and Kalamazoo for the last 6 weeks or so.

Keep me posted if anything like that comes up. My wife and I would like to join in. I've still got a couple of toys in the basement that would be ideal for the 8-10 year old range (boys).
