I know, I know... thoughts or comments: '98 D1, 54K, purchased off lease, certified, fortunately. Took it to dealer for 52K svc and came away with new front cover gasket, crankshaft seal, cam sensor "o ring," head gaskets, oil pan gasket (which got "right stuff" sealant applied(?)). They are replacing the rocker arms next week re a tapping in the engine. The good part is the entire operation cost the $100 deductible on the certified warranty vs the charge of $1300 plus the rockers yet to be done. My concern is all this being needed at 54K. Part of the LR "mystique"? The car has been meticulously maintained, and I love it otherwise. Is this common? |

Common? It's a given. Just wait until around 60,000 miles when your springs and shocks, O2 sensors, and catylitic convertors start to go bad. Get ready to start shelling out the cash. |

yes off coarse its common, its a rover , the most dependible four by four by far. diddnt you know that gee. havent you seen the list of damages and repaires to camal vehicles. the movies look great but they never show them reparing, replaceing, cursing, cheating..... eack 110 support truck carries 45 axle shafts, 70 difs, 265 modules sensors altenators.... and if it gets to hairy just call a helicopter to fly in spares that no one brought.... geee guy you do drive the best. just read all the other stories and articles. diff upgrades, axle conversion to 24 spline, 4.6 engine installs, 5.2 installs, worn cams and how to upgrade, change oil three times a month, lucas electrical? nothing can touch it. use only castrol brake fluid. drive around all day trying to find it? oh yes your dealer does offer optional winch and bumper combos though thank god, could not get this offered with any other manufactures. be prepered and carry spares |

Jim Every malady you mention that is being fixed, I have read about previously. Dweb is composed of a small minority of owners with a disproportionate number doing far more offroad use and personal maintenance than the average LR owner. So just know that experiences here may not reflect average use/maintenance. I am a short time owner of a '98 D1 with 55k. I purchased a few thousand miles ago. It had been a commercial fleet vehicle in Tuscon AZ. It has completely untouched undercoating so I think it's safe to say that it had never been offroad before my ownership. No rust, no water leaks, NO drivetrain leaks, the PS box does leak. I did the simple stuff right after purchase, change all fluids(haven't done swivels yet), new hoses, new belt, it's got new tires, grease the shafts/UJ, ... now an alternator after a bearing went south. Anyway, I didn't maintain it, so I don't know how it was maintained. I assumed after inspecting the thing and not finding things I expected to find after spending time here, that it was in good shape and had been reasonably maintained, though I was not impressed with the appearance of the valve train visible through the oil fill, or the film collected in the upper recess of the oil fill cap. I went with synthetic. After all that, i is not uncommon to have the leaks, hey if it stays below a quart per 1K... The valve train issue I have read plenty about but the only real info here is likely to be owned by LR. If someone has numbers it'd be great to see. Anecdotal evidence is not highly regarded by myself. If you don't turn wrenches, be glad you have a warranty. Hey Leaky, got a 502 in a Disco...? Ken |
