Now, I am not talking your detroit, or your tires, or something necessarily that makes your truck better offroad (unless it really is your favorite or most useful). I mean what you actually added or modified on your truck that gives you the most pleasure or you couldn't live without, for example an mp3 player, a work light, or an engel fridge. For me, honestly, the best modification I did was take the ash tray cover off the ash tray so it could be used as a coin tray. Very simple, nothing special, but before, I kept my coins in that little tray right above it, and they always flew out on corners or on trails and was always hard to get the right coins out of there. Now, just push in, and the little tray slides out, and all my coins are right there. I guess simple things in life and all that, but I wanted to know what you guys have that make life a little better. (rainy, icy, boring day)

Right now I would have to say adding a ham radio to the rig. It's great to be able to talk to someone 50+ miles away with great signal quality (vs. CB, or god forbid FRS)

I'd have to say my front and rear bumpers that I made. They are useful, allow me better approach and departure angles, and selling the rear bumpers has allowed me to do many other things to my truck without having to rely on "family" money.

I think the mod the gives me the most pleasure and enjoyment is the factory CD changer I got for almost nothing from another owner who upgraded to a full-on pimp system. The CD changer is hidden away inside the center console cubby, so the interior wasn't ruined. The ride inside a Defender borders on miserable, and having my favorite music playing I'm driving really makes a difference.

I would have to say that the following item has provided me with the most enjoyment, the two other are close but the CDL is the winner.

1ST
Adding CDL to my DII $30.00

2ND
Removing the lower portion of my front bumper $5.00
My new rear bumper that I built so my ghetto booty DII would not drag on everything :)

BTW John, the SMB's fit perfect on the new rear bumper!

my disco it was without a doubt the roof rack. i used that thing so much i donmt know how i went without one before.. bags of mulch, couches, drywall.. it all went up top

one of the reasons i became so stoked over seemingly downgrading to my range rover was it's ability to swallow drywall and plywood which the disco couldn't do. so though i want a rack for it, it's not as important. range rover is still underconstruction but i have an idea in my mind for a modification that should be my favorite. i'll show it off once i've done it :)

Dave,

you got a pic of your new rear handy? I thought you posted it somewhere, but I couldn't find it.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say the most important and enjoyable accessory to my DII has been......the Dweb. I've learned so much more about my truck and wheeling, and met some great foks in the Pa/NJ area to wheel with, found new places to go, and even found a 95 RR LWB for my wife all because of Dweb. Hell, I've even been mightly entertained by some of the nonsense that has gone on...it all has value!

ok this is an easy one...truckers arm rest

My two favorites:

1) $10 digital indoor/outdoor thermometer that records high/low temps

2) $14 high-volume beige rubber floor mats from Wal-mart

These two small additions have contributed immensely to my enjoyment of the Disco.

Damn I'd have to say those big stupid looking cup
holders and I second John I love my CD changer!
And the latest addition of the diamond plate
flooring on my rack, that just made a whole lot
of difference!

I'd have to say the rubber floor mats from Wal-Mart are the accessory I use and enjoy most, but when I get stuck or I'm working on my truck and the sun goes down I really start to love and appreciate my fog lights (I moved them underneath). Although, that trucker's armrest looks real damn good.

My Hi-Lift.

It actually saved my ass on the way home from work the other day!

And my Roof Rack. Where else would I mount my Hi-Lift!

RTE rock sliders. The extra ledge helps me get in and out and most importantly helps my wife get in and out. Even though she still has a little trouble getting in. Also provides me a solid point to slam my shoes against to get all the mud and snow off of them when I'm getting in. Plus, it's added protection.

god damm that arm rest is fricking ugly, man i feel sorry for you. the best thing ive have added is air rescue hooks. drip catchers. good chevy 502 big block. chevy one tonne axles. well i no longer need air rescue hooks, we use to use these a lot when rover was breaking down, no longer need drip catchers would get too full all the time with drpping and leaking fluid. but since our conversion every thing seems to be where it should have been when we bought. could you imagine if no buddy else in the world made cars and we all drove rovers? picture that.

I would say the sheepskin seat covers from costco. the value of those is unbealivable and they fit so perfect on my 96d1 with cloth interior and my 98 RR with leather. best buy by far for me

Robbie were you the guy I told the ash-tray trick to a while back???? If so I'm glad you like it that much.

Thom, I'm going to get a trucker's arm rest before my drive to Louisiana in a few day thanks for sharing it.

Now, my most useful modification is probablly keeping a machette on the dashboard (don't ask).

And no one is going to bite on your bumper dumper comments Blue, no matter how much you want to show a picture of it in use.

I will have to agree with Al. The big ugly coffee holders are great for the X-large Tim Hortons needed for the road. Do they only drink espressos in the UK? Nothing else would seem to fit in the DII holders.

"the best modification I did was take the ash tray cover off the ash tray so it could be used as a coin tray"

So you now have coins in the dash which make noise on every bump. DON'T DO IT!

Best mod. Outfitting the second disco as a Tow Rover

CBII lift (RRC rears in front and custom 200# springs in back), Aux lights wired with stock fog light wires and a new genuine switch, genuine hitch, ball, and locking pin, genuine winch kit with smoker, and U-Haul trailer wiring. Soooooooo much nicer than stock or towing with Alyssa's disco.

Basically what I am saying is the best mod I made was knowing when to stop making mods :)

hey carter, don't think that was directed towards me when you posted it, but i think i did get that idea from your post. and ron, they were already in the dash in that little tray above the ash tray. my passenger floor was covered in coins from them flying out of there. so now my truck is cleaner, coins are easier to get to and I can't hear them bouncing around above the sound of my exhaust leak anyway.

1. GMRS Radio (Icom IC-F2020) for the same reasons as Pugsly

2. Roof Rack

3. Rear ladder. (Used more as a grab handle to step on the rear bumper)

My fav mod so far is actually a removal. I'm in the computer programming/networking field so where I work there are a number of people making good money and driving status-symbol vehicles. Naturally many people thought my 96 Disco was one of them (there's no other Rovers in our parking lot). When I went to OME HD all around, I got a "nice lift" comment from a couple people who actually drive off road (two j@@p owners and one old Bronco). Then I took the dremel to the bumper. :)

When I came back to work the following Monday I must have had half-a-dozen or more people (most of them I've never talked to before) come up to me and say something like "I'm sorry about what happened to your Range Rover. How long before it gets fixed." I just said in my best hows-the-weather-today deadpan voice "Oh, I choped the air damn off for a better approach angle when negotiating rocks and ledges on the trail" and walked away.

Cost of the dremel: $50.00 Cost of the beer while working: $4.00 Look on status-focused coworkers: Priceless

It's not all *ABOUT* the beer, Karen...it's just all *WITH* the beer. Actually, either beer or coffee. I don't work on my truck or my computer without one or the other within arm's reach...
