Last night I was driving down the highway with the heat on as high as it goes. then for some reason the air gets considerably cooler. then the next morning I noticed that the air smelt like anti-freeze so I popped the hood and shut the engine off. I could see some some steam and heard pressure coming from the back of the engine compartment so I checked my coolant and it was low and i could see antifreeze leaking and spraymarks but could not directly see where it was coming from. Any info or past expierences with this same problem please post or email me at

you heater core went. oh boy. bear of a job.

for now you'll want to take the in hose and the out hose and join them together until you can get it fixed. top off the anitfroze too... you probably lost a bunch.

better explination when i get home from work unless someone else chimes in

If the steam is from the back of the engine compartment it is probably not the heater core. If the heater core was leaking evidence of this should be found in the passanger compartment as well. The lack of heat is from the lack of coolant running through the heater core.
As for items on the back of the engine that could leak intakes are common and would expell large amounts of coolant quickly. Take a flash light and look around the rear of the engine where the intake manifold meets the cylinder heads (assuming this is a disco I). Refill the recovery tank, start engine and let run while inspection is performed. If the leak is as bad as it sounds it should be evident what the culprit is.

You know Jason...dont mean to rub it in, but since you are from Arizona, and also just for the sake of it....It was 70 here today in Phoenix. That, of course, was the high....I almost had to put on a light jacket to combat the chilly 48+ degrees here at 5am this morning.

Sorry you are having trouble, though. I had my heater core replaced earlier this year when the AC went out during the middle of summer....so I guess I had my own personal hell back then. Good thing it was under warranty.

Good luck man.

Jess, thanks for the comforting weather report as i'm fixing my rig in pouring rain. It turns out that one of the hoses was split on the bottom so i just replaced the hose and the hose that runs parrallel to it now the heat works evcen better and absoultley no leak so i'm happy with the $1.89 fix. Tommorow's job replacing o2 sensors, tommorows forcast 35 high pouring rain with mid to heavy showers in the afternoon
