I've been reviewing the archived messages about Dual Battery setups and have a few questions I'm hoping that some of you might be able to help me with. As the weather stays cold here in Maryland, the Optima RedTop is dying a slow death and needs to be replaced. With so much discussion about Dual Batteries, I'd like to explore that avenue further. Currently, my D1 is running a high-output alternator (the one that can power a welder - precision something). Plans are in the works to add a winch (probably Warn X9000i), six hella 500 lights, 2 auxiliary lights and 1 rear work light, in addition to a host of interior accessories like GPS, phone, CB and power invertor. That considered, do I just run dual batteries parallel or get an isolator? Do I need to purchase two identical batteries (like both Optima Red)? Or can I mix and match (like red and yellow)? Can I install one now and the other later? After removing the jack and hacking off the airbox horn, what do I need to use to mount the battery? Any recommendations on locations to mount an isolator? On a note about isolators, I've been reading about the Hellroaring Technologies BIC-75300A Isolator/Combiner - does anyone have experience with this unit? Any comparisons to other units? Thanks for the help! |

I am looking at the Hellroaring product as well right now. I have heard some mixed feedback about Hellroaring based on what I think may have been earlier models of isolators. The thing I like is the remote module for the driver that lets you switch from primary batt. to secondary batt. to both batteries coupled. Some units require you to actually open the hood to make the adjustments. If anyone knows of the specifics of issues with these isolators please chime in. |

Over the years I've cooked a couple of isolators during hard use... I also built my own... The fact that an isolator requires a heat sink means that it uses power... Why waste it! I've been running dual battery setups in which both batteries are wired parallel for years and have had no problems... Just make certain you use #2 cable or better... Of course for the camper I use an isolator. But it's a voltage sensing relay type...If you are looking for emergency power I would do it that way.... |

Can you explain your parallel setup? Do you use a winch with the parallel setup? Thanks |
