Please help. I drove to work this morning and after a few minutes of driving, I noticed that I didn't have to give my 96 Disco any gas pedal for it to chug along at speed. I can rev the engine so I know the cable is good, but it never goes back down to an idle. Stopping was very difficult. I made it to work and as soon as I put it in park the rpms shot right up. I turned the engine off and checked under the hood. I can manualy move the throttle, nothing feels like it is binding, the cables look good, the litle vacuum thing on one cable looks good and is holding air. What else should I check? We had an ice storm last night, but right now it is above freezing and the truck is warmed up. every time I start the truck the rpms shoot up and I turn the key when it reaches 3000 rpm so I don't blow the engine.

Can this be a problem with the choke? I started it again and the rpms went up and stabalized at 3000rpm. The trottle assembly is in its idle position and moving it revs the engine, so no problem with the mechanical end. What other sensors could be the culprit? Also, I had a mouse take up residence in between the valve cover and the fuel injection rail (passenger side) . I pulled out the nest. I don't see any nibbled wires or hoses but there may be . Please help

Could be that the IAC motor stuck wide open or came apart in some way. A missing vacum line will also give you high idle..

OK, I started the truck again and the rpms went to 2500. I shut it off and took the iac motor off. It was dirty, so I cleaned it and put it back in. The "pin" part of it moved in and out with some resistance, nothing obviously wrong with it. I started the truck and it was worse, went over 3000 rpm. I started it a few more times and it went a little under 3000 rpm. Next a pulled off the throttle position sensor. It looked fine, still had spring tension. I put it back and started the truck and it was a little better. The rpms go to 2000 and then down to 1500. Before it would not come back down. So it got better but it is still idling too high. Suggestions?

My suggestion would be to check every vacuum hose. If any of them are disconnected or leaking, then you will get a high rpm idle.

mice are dickens! they like to chew little holes in shit . I have had them mess up a number of vehicles while stored in the barn.

I agree check all the vacume lines.

the fact that the IAC and throttle position sensor changed the rpm but didnt fix it makes me think the system may be confused possibly by the fact its been trying to compensate for a vacume leak.

I'd start by disconnecting the battery for a 1/2 hour to let the ECU return to factory default settings while you check all your vacume lines.

good luck

In this world there are two kinds of people: those who can clean their steppers and those who must replace their steppers. You might be the second type. I had the same symptoms and it was my stepper.
