Ron-
Will the new engine be serpentine or are you staying with the v-belts?
-4.2L camshaft
-3.9L disco front cover(for dizzy drive)
-You'll need to manufacture a spacer for the crank, so the lower timing gear will line up.
-Give it a little more fuel. ie.. 4.2L coldstart eprom and 4.2L fuel rail.
-Two new style motor mounts
These are the very basics, depends on your defenition of 'long-block'. any ancillaries on it? or is it just bottom end and heads? Are you planning on using the 'THOR' components? etc...

Oh yeah-
When installing the new cam, you'll need to do new lifters as well.

The land rover long block.

I would like to keep the V-belts. Can I reuse the 3.5 front cover, fuel rail etc?

Due to the difference in crank lengths from a 3.5 to 4.0, you'll need the later front cover- Don't see a problem with the 3.5 fuel rail, although not the best option. The only real pain in the whole job, is spacing the lower timing gear.

If one swaps out the wiring harness and ECU, could you put the 4.0 in as is?

OK, what's it take to put a 4.0 GEMS engine into an earlier body?

Check the RPi website -- their whole business is built around making these conversions. You may need a chip from them to make it run right. You'll probably need to use your old oil pan and pickup tube and "relieve" the inside of the sump to make room for the larger crank journals of the 4.0.

At this point I am looking at maybe just doing the little work the 3.5 needs

Too much effort for a truck that won't support the investment.

I think I will just send the heads out, pop in some new rings and main bearings and put it back together.

Hey Eric
Just tell the shop that you have a 63 buick 215 V8 thats bored out. They will have the parts! Including the valves and guides. Probably just need to be cut and lapped anyway if at all! Key is a "GOOD" machine shop. For what most of those guys are capable of, they charge way too little.
