Boy when it rains it pours. With my RR in the shop minus a rear end, my wife's ignition seems hopelessly locked. The key will not turn/start/etc. I have tried moving the steering wheel to disengage the steering lock and have even tried moving the shift lever. All to no avail. Please help, my score is -2 Land Rovers and counting and I only have one spare car for my wife and I. Thanks, Lee

Can the Disco operate properly without the steering lock. i.e. I believe the steering lock to be the culprit, so can it be removed permenatly? Thanks, Lee

Lee, your problem may be the ignition switch itself. Has it been giving you any trouble turning prior? Could be your key is getting very worn. I would try another key, perhaps even have the st#$lership cut you a new one. I had to replace my entire switch assembly and that was not much fun. But, my key wouldn't turn either. I first started with lubricating the switch. Go find some graphite powder and spray down your key, and insert and remove numerous times. Perhaps even shoot a bit down in there. It may help...

Remove the trim around the steering wheel and give the cylinder a few good wacks with a hammer.

I would remove the trim piece and look to see it the lock cylinder is fully seated into its bore these things have one of the weakest bullshit ignition locks I'v ever seen.

what year and model?

My 96 disco does the samething every now and then ignition key will not turn. My service advisor told me that the little tumbler pins are not matching up with the key and i could replace key/igniton assembly or squirt a little bit of graphite in the key hole to lube up the tumblers.

The graphite works and my car starts.

Well no such luck for me. The graphite injection did not work, so the tow truck is bringing her home. I am going to try the "hit it with a whack" suggestion before removing the entire lock. Has anyone tried removing the steering lock and reinstalling without it. I understand that it is a theft deterent, but what a pain in the ass. Thanks for the help so far. Lee

Ok gang, I took Alex's advice (after taking tillman et. al. advice) and took it apart and whack the crap out of it. Now it works. Go figure. All I know is it saved me $274.99 in parts. So what I paid $50 towing. Isn't that cool how LR can make you feel good about paying a $50 towing fee. Thanks to everyone. Lee
