I am considering purchasing a D2 w/ 20K on odometer. Few questions regarding some of the acronyms flying around here: What does ACE mean? ETC? Any things that I should keep an eye out for? |

ACE = Active Cornering Enhancement, good for on the road, but not essential, and most think it is something that might break. ETC = Electronic Traction Control, basically replaces the need for a locking differential, but if you go out a lot you will want a Disco with locking center diff at least. The ETC works very well in sand, ice, snow, mud. Make sure the service records have a lot of little things on it that have already been taken care of. Make sure there are no records of engine or transmission work. A whine from the transmission is normal, as long as it is not grinding or coming and going, it should be low level and consistent. Look for water leaks around any and all windows. Oil seeps are normal, no leaks though. http:landrover.mrbaileyshistory.net |

Check for the completed recalls on the SLABS, ACE and idler pulleys. Also, some early radiators were defective and were replaced. Mine also had the intake manifold gasket replaced. My transmission finally died after threatening me for a coupla months, make sure it engages immediately after placing it in gear and it shifts smoothly in the lower gears. I guess that's pretty obvious stuff. If you plan on making a primary off-road vehicle, I would recommend against ACE (my rig has ACE). Yes, it is something that can break, but IMO, more importantly, it can limit modifications you might make to the suspension down the road. Check the rear diff for water ingress. A large screwdriver and about two minutes is all it takes. Before extending the rear diff breather tube, mine contaminated every time I went wading. Check the rotors, they wear quickly. Good luck, Mike |
