No, it's true !!
When I turn the air-con on, the engine starts to hesitate, its fine when cruising at a constant speed/load but as soon as I try to accelerate the old lump starts coughing and spluttering.
Its a '93 D1 V8i with 120k miles.
I've done the plugs & leads and looked for earth leaks but didn't find anything.
It went into the dealer and their suggestion was that the engine was coked up, so the valves were de-carboned ( although I couldn't see how it was okay without the air-con but coked up with the air-con)Anyway that didn't work and the suggestion was 'well don't use the air-con'.

Strangely, I would like to use the air-con and accelerate ( at the same time ).

The problem is inconsistent and can occur when cold, hot, going slow, going fast(er) and on other occasions it's fine for 30 minutes and then starts.

Any help/hints you experts can give would be greatly appreciated. I know its all part of the LR character but I'm worried that it might indicate a real problem brewing.

I suspect you have a bad ground. Although, I had a similar problem with a Defender that was brought to the shop that turned out to be a bad wiring job on the ignition module. Might check your ignition amplifier and wiring from distributor to amplifier, along with checking all of the grounds.

But, before you do this, put your volt meter on the truck (I use the lighter outlet) and see if the voltage drops when it has this problem. If so, you have at least narrowed it down somewhat. FWIW-when I did this on the Defender, the voltage did not fluctuate.

Peace,
Paul
