Hello, all. I bought my Disco, used, eight months ago from a private party. I was curious to see what repairs and service were done at LR. I called three local dealerships this week and gave them my Vin#. Each one asked if I bought my Disco new from them. Of course, I lied and said yes. They still wouldn't give me the history of my vehicle. Any suggestions? |

My first suggestion would be to stop lying to the dealer. I would think that they have a pretty good idea as to whether they sold the car or not. If I was a dealer, I don't think I would have given you the service records either, once I realized you were lying about where the car came from. What's in it for them? |

I agree with Axel. I bought my '95 from a Ford dealership, called the local LR dealership, explained the situation, and they said "sure, we know that Discovery. Come on in and we'll give you a printout of the service records." Very enlightening. |

Hey Starr, While lying is never a good way to go, the Warantee records for the vehicle are a matter of public record. You should be able to supply any dealer with the VIN and get a copy of the Warantee record. If they refuse, make sure you mention that LRNA refered them to you (They did me) and that you will be calling LRNA back to find out why they would not co-operate.... ~Scott T. When I was Disco shopping I found a 95 model with only 30k on it. It was at the local Toyota dealer, they couldn't figure out how to bring the idle down, so they took it to LR Houston to have it looked at. While the truck was in the shop at LR Houston I called the service writer and asked her to look up the history, she did, and needless to say it was a book, about 3 inches thick. I wound up not purchasing that trouble child and got a good deal from LR Houston on a 98 model certified Disco. Treated like a friend at the Houston LR dealer!! |

I called the first dealer and when they asked if I bought the car new I said no, then they said I couldn't get records. That way didn't work so I tried the second way. Same results. Thanks for the advice and now I'm off to go to church to ask for forgiveness. |

I bought a used 96 disco from a friend who always serviced it at the dealer(landrover glencove N.Y.).I am doing the same,anyway I asked for a print out of service records and they tell me that they cannot pull up past records and cannot print anything,now I hear that some people get this info no problem. Whats the Deal?? suggestions please.......... |

Hey Nick, I had the same thing happen at the same dealership. I was just thinking that maybe this is a Glen Cove N.Y. thing. I was also thinking I should contact Land Rover North America about this. I wonder if they are obligated to provide us with the service records. I purchased a '95 Disco from a friend and he said he'd get a copy of the service records for me. I said don't worry about it, I'll get it myself. I then went to the dealer and they said they could look up the service records for me but couldn't give me a print out. We should contact the head of Landrover Glen Cove first and let him know our situation. I would also add that we are in contact with many landrover owners, and possible future customers. I don't feel that what we are asking for is such a big deal! I wonder why they are so reluctant to provide this info??? |

ACTUALLY, it is illegal (at least in PA) for the dealer to provide the warranty records to anyone other than the current owner of the vehicle. You will always get resistance from a dealer if you didn't buy the vehicle from them, because it is their a** on the line if you aren't the owner. Warranty records contain radio codes, key codes, etc... anyone can call the dealer with a vin and get all that personal information about your car. How would you like it if a dealer gave a criminal the tools to steal your car? ALSO, it is a pain in the butt to pull up the records, and 99% of the crap that pulls up is just going to alarm people for no real reason. The major things to look for are scheduled maintenance claims. You need to be sure that the vehicle was brought in every 7500 miles for service. Also remember that the only thing that pulls up on a vehicle are the claims that went through to warranty, so not everything is on there. The only way to get complete records for a vehicle is to go to every dealer where the car was ever serviced and ask them personally to pull up the records. HOWEVER, there is no harm in calling the dealer and asking them to look over the records and advise you whether or not it looks like this one is a lemon. AND maybe, just maybe, you'll decide to buy a different car FROM the dealer, who will stand behind that car. They have the ability to actually fix any issues that arise. They know the history, and more importantly, understand the history. They have selected to purchase that vehicle instead of passing it on to the auction, selling it to the wholesaler, or returning it to the lease company. In most cases, they will certify it, which gives you a longer warranty. you can even buy a land rover extended warranty (which is a usually a really good buy on rovers). Now think about this for a minute. Why does the dealer want to help you out when you chose not to buy the car from them? When I first started working for the dealer, I gave out records willy-nilly. I got MAJORLY chastised for it, and was told NEVER to give out records without explicit permission of the manager. There is a way too big liablity for it. I'm not going to put my job on the line to help someone who didn't buy a car from me. As for warranty being a matter of public record, that isn't true. All the things that pull up on carfax are a matter of public record. Salvage/flood title, frame damage, odometer discrepancy, # of registrations, buyback, lemon, etc... That's all. The rest is private information. Hope that shed a little light on the situation. |

Alyssa, I think you misunderstood. We were talking about vehicles that we bought, and now owned, that were serviced at this particular dealership. I, for one, didn't call up but rather went down in person. I showed my registration and told them I'd purchased the vehicle from a person whom they were very familiar with. He brought the vehicle in for every scheduled service and took excellent care of the vehicle! They affirmed this but added that they couldn't give me a copy of the service records because they didn't have the computer hooked up to a printer. This was BULLSHIT! And I didn't appreciate being lied to. The person I purchased the vehicle from offered to get a copy of the service records for me but I insisted on doing it myself. I didn't want to bother him because he didn't live near the dealer and I did. I will definately look into this matter further. Consumers have alot of rights that they don't exercise and I intend on finding out what they are in this particular instance. |

Alyssa makes a good point - records give name & address of orginal (could be current) owner and other private info. I've been dealing with a very nice guy at my local (and only) AZ dealer and he is pretty free with info...but then again I'm intent on giving him more business. Of course, if you now own the vehicle, those records should more or less "go with the vehicle" in my opinion. |

I'm actually surprised that it was easy but i just called up the dealer that was in the owners manual and told them I just bought the vehicle and that I would like a copy of the service records. They faxed them to me within the hour Along with all the information about the previous owner, I found the radio code listed and stuff that they asked about but either didn't get done or waited before getting done. The little service book with the stamps had only one stamp in the beginning but it was fully serviced on a regular basis. Invaluable information there for me! Santo 98 Disco I LSE |

JRoc, that is ridiculous. I would be just as p.o.'ed as you are if that had happened. If you go in person and produce registration, etc., they really should give you the records!!!!! That's nuts. Nick, also ridiculous. I wouldn't be too happy about that treatment from my dealer. Were you guys asking the service guy or the salesperson? Try asking the salesperson. Generally we aim to please. :-) About the printer being broken, that could be true. Crap like that happens all the time at our dealership. You do have every right to the records if you own the vehicle. Some dealers really do p*ss me off. anyway, post the last 8 of your vin and your e-mail address and I'll see what I can do. |

I'm not going to incriminate myself. I already said I could get fired for giving out the info! But I have access to the records on any Land Rover imported into the US since 1987. So does anyone who has any sort of integral role in the dealership. sales, parts, service, management. regular techs are iffy, but master techs do. It is a completely national database called infotrail/dcs. |

All I need is the damn radio code since I bought my Disco used and it didn't come with a manual (as I later found out that this has become a money maker for individuals at auto auctions, etc to strip the cars of manuals, original florr mats, CD changers, etc. and list them on ebay. These guys are making a ton of pocket cash). I even faxed the dealer My VIN number with my owners card and he still won't give me the damn code. He keeps saying that he can't get into the computer or that since I didn't buy it there, he wouldn't have the code. The funny thing is that in the next breath, he said bring it in for service and they will repair it. I guess he doesn't understand by screwing me on this he will never see my service work, and I will make sure to only sing poor, poor, praises about the dealership. Anyone have any ideas where I can turn to to get the radio code. I can produce everything to prove I own the truck, or I guess it's off to find a new radio. Thanks |

John, just call a bunch of different dealerships. That is complete BS about not being able to look up your radio code. All I needed was my VIN, originally, but then it turned out that the radio didn't match my VIN, so I pulled the radio, got the serial # off of it, and they were able to look it up like that. I got this all from LR Alexandria, VA, who had never seen my truck, and they did it over the phone. Robbie |

Alyssa that's really sweet of you, but in my instance it's more than just a matter of getting the service records, now it's principal! I'm now the owner of this vehicle, and any record of service to it I feel I'm entitled to. One of the main advantages of me buying this vehicle from the person I did, was that he had it serviced at the dealership as per there schedule. Why they would be reluctant to hand this information over to me is annoying! So I'm going to first see if I can straighten this matter out with the service manager there, and if I am unable to, I'll look for ya! Thanks again and wish me luck. |

Do you think it might be possible for you to obtain the service/repair records for my vehicle (which of course I am the sole owner? (the last 8 digits of my Vin# is above). David, what happens is that sometimes a radio gets replaced. Then the original radio code doesn't work. The only way to get the new code is to pull the radio out, look at the serial number, and get the code that way (and I don't know how to do that). When you are in, please ask the dealer one more time for your records from DCS. If they refuse, then ask me again. I really don't feel comfortable giving everyone records, for all the reasons I've stated above (#1 of which is that I could get fired--and I love my job!) |

Hi Alyssa, Once again thanks for your feedback. Believe it or not I was able to obtain the radio code (third different one) from Land Rover NA itself yesterday and the number was different from the other two (different numbers)I was previously given by dealers. Once again I tried to input the number (with the proceedure of Ignition Switch on (motor off) and the Radio switched on for over an hour). With this new (third) number it woked perfectly. As for service records I already have asked quite a number of dealers and for one reason or another each hasn't been able to provide them. Either I've been told they are not available or they say they will call me when they have them, but it never happens. I've tried this time and again. I've just about given up at this point, so any help that one feels comfortable giving is appreciated. Thanks you again Alysa. |
