Hi,

I am looking to add a ARB winchbar to my DII in the new year, and I wondering about doing a suspension lift at the same time given the extra weight of the winchbar.

If I just replaced the front springs with OME to give a 50mm or whatever lift can I keep my stock shockers ? or will have to change them as well ?

Will I need to stiffen the front suspension with just adding the winchbar ?

Cheers -

Yes, you need to stiffen the front springs if you add the ARB. I just put an ARB on my 99 Dll. The nose dipped about 3/4" without a winch. I then added HD OME shocks and HD OME springs in the front (I have SLS). Vehicle is level and handles well. Go to the tech section at www.expeditionexchange.com

Hi David,

Thanks for the response, did you notice if the stock shockers were the same size as the OME ones that you got ?

I figure, that I am going to have to get four new springs and two shockers and do it properly. I to have SLS. However at this point I am not keen on having a winch permanantly atteched to front of my truck.

What winch do you have ?

Danny.

Danny, the OME shocks are a little longer than stock. When I added the ARB to my SLS equipted 1999 D2 I did both shock and springs and it made a huge difference in ride. The OME was much better. If you're going with the 779 springs you'll get a lift of about 1" maybe more without the winch.

Hi Al,

Yeah, I haven't even got to the debate about which shocks and springs to get :-)

I am looking for no more than a 2" (50mm)lift, what spring/shock combination would you recommend ?

If you want more than 2" and want OME go with the 751 springs. They're the D1 front springs and should give about 2 1/2" give or take. But be sure to add some Rovertym SLS spacers for the rear unless you're going to replace the SLS airbags.

Hi Al,

WHich spring/shock combination should I go for.

I am not sure if I am going to have a winch permanently mounted on the front or not yet.

Danny,
I am winchless at present. I am considering a Mile Marker 8000 electric. Many on this site will tell you that an 8k lb winch is woefully small. However, I don't mind using a snatch block. Time will tell if this winch will meet my needs.

David, I would not go with an 8000# winch on a D2. It might work well for a D90 or a Jeep but with the extra weight I would do 9000# or higher rated winch. But it will also depend on where you wheel and how much other gear you also bring with you. A pully block will help but you shouldn't depend on it for every pull. Even if you end up using it all the time it's nice to have that extra capacity if needed. And who knows, you might be in a situation where you need the longer run.

Danny, Call either EE or BB4WA for the spring/shock recomendation. If you want OME and keep the lift about 2"+ I would go with the OME HD springs for the D1 even though you have a D2. This will give you about 1" more lift than what OME claims for the D1. You can also get more creative but the 751's up front should work well. The shocks I would stick with the OME D2 shock offering (can't remember the number) unless you want to extend your brake and ABS lines. Either way don't forget the Rovertym spacers for the SLS.

Al, David,

Thanks for the advice on the shocks/springs - look like I shall have to do this the expensive way :-)

As for winching recovery, given what I have been taught here in the UK I would ALWAYS use a block with an electric winch, because when you factor in that general the winch wire is not upto the job from the factory and drum is to small for wire rope you have already seriously compromised the safety factors that you should build into your recovery calculations.

http://www.winchtest.com has a classic example of, in this case, a warn XD9000i is shipped with inadquate strength wire rope and to small a drum. The test results makes for some interesting reading. If your rope ain't long enough - use a ground anchor, you do not want to be around if a wire rope fails and a vehicle will offer little protection.

Anyway, happy holidays.....

Danny.
