After lo ratio desert driving my radiator water reservoir boiled, losing 5 litres maybe, but temp guage stayed normal (no obvious sign of problem sitting in the car!). This does not happen if driving in hi ratio. i have a 97 4.0 automatic. Any suggestions?

Kevin:
This is not uncommon, on two points. First off, the stock temp gauges are notorious for informing you that your engine is hot-right after you've lost your coolant! Secondly, your '97 probably needs a new radiator. Yes, it is only a few years old, but trust me, you will be in far better shape replacing it now. I went around and around looking for a replacement radiator and finally got a good one from Motorcars ltd. in Houston, and even they required two tries to get a good one shipped in to me. It was the fifth one and the first to be successfully delivered. Trust me on the shipping part, it is hellish to repack one once it's delivered and bent up in transit. I just wasn't gonna fix a $500 radiator!

Man, I really demanded you trust me, didn't I. Kinda like when your kid says "Honest", you know he's lying!

Peace,
Paul

The radiator can be partially clogged and still perform normally on the road. Get it flushed or rodded out.

Is the viscous drive on the fan working properly? (Is it loud at revs?).

Is the ratio of water/antifreeze correct? Too much antifreeze will cause it to run hotter.

Also, the coolers for the automatic transmission can get it radiator hot. Try locking in a gear to reduce shifting.
