I guess I need to break down and buy one for my laptop as my check engine light came on and I'm tired of having to pay to have the codes read. I'm not a computer geek but do have the sense and patience to figure things out. Two questions, are they hard to use and two, can someone point me in the right direction to buy one.

Thanks

Thanks. I don't know if my autozone does the same but maybe they do since it may lead to parts sales.

Thanks, John

all autozones do it for free. I listed the part number for a CHEAP handheld model from Harbor Freight a few weeks ago in the non-tech section I think the title of the post was "cheap code reader" if you want to look for it.

Problem is those "cheap" code readers will tell you what codes are being thrown but it wont clear them. You'll have to chock up the $800-$900 for the real mccoy.

Well, the cheapo I mentioned from Harbor Freight might not do it but I know for a fact that the $125 autozone sells will.

Sorry my bad!! I went to Autozone today to get my codes read and did a little reseach on eBay. You're right in that the inexpensive reader CAN clear the codes and check engine light. I just bought a nice reader off eBay. Listings as low as $75 to 150.
