What are the alternatives to the Land Rover towing converter. I have Greg Davis' wiring diagram, but I hate to spice into the wires.

None that I have ever seen. Don't be affraid to splice into the wires, it's not like they are powering anything else.

Only thing to be worried about is that the wires run into the BCU (body control unit). Have seen RR 38a models with aftermarket trailer wiring smoke the BECM ( body electronics control module) and 1 diso II that smoked the BCU. The LR kit is pretty much a set of diodes in a black box. I would recommend wiring up diodes in your harness and unplugging it before the trailer hits any water. The LR kit is rumored to be out in Jan

P.S. - BCU is a disco II - not in disco I

Tom, I actually have the genuine harness because at the time I was looking for one I didn't know about the method in the tech section. They were back-ordered all over the place when I was looking for one (for a D1), I just called around at to all the dealerships listed in the back of the owner's manual untill I found one that had one in stock and got them to ship it to me. This might be more of a problem now though because I believe they have been backordered for some time now, when I got mine it was during the first month or so of the shortage.

If you get the one with the relay pack you are buying the same thing as the LR kit just without the plug.

Ron,
relay pack? ...where can I find one?

I was sure that someone had I write-up with part numbers for a very clean install, but I could have dreamed it.

Rather than just splicing they have them with a converter (relay pack). This is what I did on the DI with the U-haul kit in the tech section.

I did the cheapie thing with the WalMart kit on my D2 (2001) many camper trips ago. $25, 0 problems installing and 0 problems with vehicle or camper functions.

Forgot to add to the above post - the kit required from WalMart and installation steps are archived here, or I can email them.

Carter

Just installed my hitch rec. about a month ago. I've found harnesses online at salvage yards but haven't bothered getting one. My wife was at the dealership recently and asked about used harnesses you know from a trade in or lease return and they told her they should be in in jan or feb. I'm not in any rush at the moment.
