I'm considering this as wife won't go for an 'expedition' type. Need to carry canoe, etc, but still fit vehicle in garage (only have 1 inch clearance as it is.) It is a 2001 SD, so no sunroofs to worry about. Anyone have pics of this installed with cross pieces? Opinions are welcome, too. Thanks John F Las Vegas, NV |

I have to cross pieces that I can take a picture of but not the extensions. The cross pieces come off pretty quick. I was able to fit a 14-15' canoe on the stock rails with cross pieces when I also tied the rear to the spare tire or hitch with bungies. But if I was to do it again I would have just picked up a Thule rack. |

If no one comes forward with any I remember seeing one in the photo gallery somewhere. To expand on Al's post though, I wouldn't trust those cross rails to hold a canoe they are just flimsy, attach to the roof rails very flimsily, and in turn the roof rails are attached to the roof flimsily as well. I would just get some yakima or thule cross bars that attach to the rain gutters, these will probably be cheaper than all that factory stuff anyway. You probably won't get in your garage with them if you only have an inch to spare but they remove very quickly (at least the ones on my friend's jeep do and I would imagine the mount is similar) |

John, I have the Thule 953 system with 65" load bars on my '01 Disco LE. These are the 11" extended rain gutter mounts and the truck does fit in my garage. Don't have any photos but I will be putting this back on next weekend for a mountain trip to NC. Greg B Marietta, GA |

How far above the factory roof rails does this sit? I've got less than 2" to spare to clear the top of the garage as is. A guestimate will do for now. Thanks... John F |

I just put these on and measured 79" to the top of the load bar on the rear mount. The top of the roof rails on my '01 LE measures 76.5" (that is 1.5" lower than the dimensions shown on your visor). So, the Thule 953 brackets add 2.5" above the factory roof rails. |
