Anyone replaced a head gasket on at Series 1, 4.0 Disco? Would love to hear some input etc.

Mark:
I'm almost finished with mine, what do you want to know?

Paul,

Basically, how long did it take, any suprises encountered, that sort of stuff

Just remember that the head bolts are one time use and should be replaced with the gasket. And if you are going to the trouble of replacing the gasket, you should send the heads out to have them checked.

Mark:
So far, with just a few deviations, everything has gone right back together. I had problems with two parts. First off, the rearmost head bolts are a PITA~! Use a big breaker bar and make damned sure the socket is all the way engaged. The sludge builds up around them, misleading you into thinking you have a good grip, when in fact, you don't! Then, I had more difficulty than I'm really willing to admit getting the exhaust manifolds onto the head. The bolts didn't want to line up and fearing stripping one of the bolts (which I may have done anyway-helicoil to the rescue, if true) I ended up having to file some relief so they would fit back together.

I have all of the big parts back on and am now just buttoning it back up.

Man, is it nice to have a cylinder head that only weighs a few pounds!

And, Pugsley is right, if you are going to the trouble of removing the head, do a valve job-it needs it, I guarantee it.

Now for my "While you're in there lecture". Consider:
Cam drive hardware
Injector cleaning
New rocker shafts

D'Oh, time-the LR estimating guide says 7.1 hour to R&R both heads. I figure about 15 hours for the first time in a poorly equipped shop.
Good luck,
Paul
