Just trying to see if anyone else has tried any aftermarket ignition coils and to get some feedback on how well or not so well they work. I have been looking at several set ups but all say not to use with standard OEM setup. Thanks, Will |

Will In regards to use for a distributor based RR: After market coils do not work very well. Internally they are different(checking with a multimeter), and they tend to leak oil(because they weren't designed to be mounted horizontally?). Low oil level causes the ignition to misfire when the truck is tilted at odd angles. This may be why some people have stalling LR engines when they are off-road, and can find no explination. Too much resistance in the primary or secondary coil can also cause ignition misfiring under normal driving conditions. Applying too much voltage or amps to the high tension leads will burn out the cap/rotor etc., so what good is it. I do use Magnecore 8.5 leads because they are more durable and create less electrical noise(which helps the EFI sysytem). And NGK VX double platinum spark plugs. I think that the Magnecores and VX plugs cause the engine to run more precisely, without screwing things up. Randall p.s. I would like to discuss buying ECUs and transmissions/trans cases for RRC from you. Call me at work if you can. 800-595-8334 or email what you have to [email protected] |

I use a US ACEL coil - the yellow one in my 95 with distributor ignition. Resistance is within the range and it is mounted vertically near the headlight. It works beautifully with 7mm TOP GUN leads on LPG or unleaded/premium. It pumps out the fattest spark you will see and increases driveability and outright performance (and fuel economy if you dont use all that extra HP!). Cheers |

The Accel round yellow coil does work well, but can leak if mounted horizontally. |

A bit more spark. I don't want to burn anything up though and I have been advised some aftermarket coils can cause some damage. I have a K@N Filter, Borla Catback and Bosch 4 plugs in there now and every little bit of "poormans" performance and pep I can get. |

i HAVE THE K&N also - that made a big difference on its own. I run NGK irridium plugs - LR/BOSH in Australia do not reccomend BOSH Platinums for d1 motor for some reason, but do reccomend them for DII - probably the difference in ignition output and feedback etc |

Hmmm - I'm using a cheap parts store coil ($8) for a 68 Nova on the 90 RRC for about 25K now - no problems so far with that and NGK plugs and Magnecore wires. Bill |

To tell you all the truth, I actually like my Jacobs Electronic 'Energy Coil' and '8mm Scilicone plug wires'. I heard a lot of bad vibes about them (aftre I bought them), but they have really done a great job. However, I have seen the Jacobs more developped systems (Omnicoil...) do a great deal of damage to a lot of LRs...so...??? My coil is mounted at a ~30-45 degree angle, has never missed a beat, there has never been any erratic behavior (touch wood), and the plug wires help minimize water ingress (to a certain extent). Adding to all that the K&N (great product) and the Split fire plugs, I think my engine is breathing in the air and electricity pretty well. Next step would be to maximize the output by chopping off all these silencers in the back and get a pretty thick tube free flowing to the rear, and adding a adjustable fuel pump to really kill hte consumption! |
