I read Discoweb, but take all they say with a GIANT grain of salt. There are some knowlegdable guys on there, but for the most part discoweb represents exactly what I *didn't* like about the offroad community when I owned Jeeps. Lots of huge egos, beer-drinking fools (oh, sorry, the Discoweb posers drink scotch to differentiate themselves from the Jeepers), and trashtalking of other vehicles. Dumb.

It's a good thing the rest of the offroad community (educated or not) isn't asking for donations everytime they break something, otherwise we would be to busy paying for other peoples stuff to mess with out own.

Now, what cracks me up is that the new WV Touareg is a lot more of a 4x4 than the FL... Land Rover really let its customers down, slapping its badge on something that is from different category - and then losing even in this category.

Whats funny is the whiney comment that with a few little mods the FLs are the equal of Discos off road!!. What mods would they be...transfer case...ladder chassis....live axels front and rear....a foot more wheel travel...an engine transplant with - one with low down torque...disco diffs...

They are passable as what they are - a soft roader. People who own them should keep in mind that they are not trying to compete with Discos - they are a different (and cheaper) product. In Australia they have a horrid reputation for poor build quality - much worse than LR's other products.

I apologize to the dweb staff for the harm I have done to this site. I will never talk of nor post pictures of scotch beverage again.

Having driven two Freelanders, I must say that they are a fun car. LR Mainline loaned me an HSE version while the Pig was in service and I tested out an S model at a Dealer event down here in NC. The Freelander is great for city driving and a blast on dirt roads and non-technical trails.

maybe if we sent everyone at that Freelander site a 'Care Bear' they would feel better? :)

It wasn't the FreeLoader that killed Camel Trophy, at least it was still a Land Rover. Allowing the Honda CRV to enter the event was truly when Camel Trophy jumped the shark.

whats amusing to me is they bash D-web and Discos in general, yet, D-web has an area for all the various LR marques. all seem to get along fairly well plus share common information. personnaly don't see the my Defender is better than your RR or Disco better than the Freelander as they think. the difference is the people who frequent this board. most contribute something worthwhile even if it is on occassion off the wall. and if you're talking bs, you'll be called out on it. seems reasonable to me.

so gp, its your pic - do your D-web duty and call his ass out on it.

IMHO Disco Web is the standard for knowledge base, collecting helpful information and the occasional laugh or two concerning everything land rover. Everything else pales in comparison!

Hell, look how lost everyone was when the site was down while the guys transferred and rebuilt the server and site. I think even the LR factory shut down during that time!!!

Good one Mike!!! LOL

I do see this as the best source of info for everything Discovery. Thanks all.

As to FL's they are a wannabee trucks.. reminiscent of the CRV and RAV. They are marketing to that niche and using the legendary name of Land Rover to get into it. We could say the same with Porsche... with their SUV.

Anyways.. my .02 cents... going to lunch now!!!

Snicker.. Smug look when I gaze upon my disco. heheheh

Freelander, Disco, RR, Defender....all different, all Land Rovers, all built to satisfy different needs, but still all Land Rovers. If the Freelander, as an entry level LR, gets young drivers familiar with what Land Rover is all about, then that might help sales and help keep the integrity of the products we love to hate to love. The point is they are all different for a reason. To compare the Freelander to the Disco is unfair to both, they are not built to be the same thing and to expect them to be the same is no different than Car & Driver using car criteria to test SUVs. (Freelander would kick the Discos butt in a C & D car criteria test!!)

I went over and read that thread over in freelanderville and thought it was kinda funny.

I also thought it was great when KVT started posting in a polite way trying to explain to them the differences in different vehicles.anyone that thinks a freelander can do what a disco can has certainly never had a disco near its limits or been around when one was.

I'd say trucks but the freelanders are just not trucks. trucks have frames(sorry the unibody jeeps fail truck status by my terms as well)

the fact that the freelander has its own area on dweb says to me these guys are full of shit. I have been reading dweb for long enough to say I see very little shit getting thrown in that dirrection. lets get real here its Discowed. what truck is gonna get premier status?

Freelanders ROCK! Whiney Freelander owners SUCK!

BTW Defender owners are not treated well on this board either. Case in point: Defender tech and general=386 Discovery tech=2037. Can you say INEQUITY:(

Axel Haakonsen (Axel)
Posted on Tuesday, December 17, 2002 - 11:23 am:   Edit Post Delete Post Print Post

That is very true, Musky. The Freelander is not a truck, it is a road biased 4wd SUV. That's what it was designed to do, and it does that better and cheaper than the Disco ever will. Nothing wrong with that.

On road, the Disco is a pig compared to the Freelander. I know that, because I have one of each. On the other hand, trying to take a Freelander through Dusy would be madness. They both have their strenghts and weaknesses, and are different animals in their own right. To say that one is better than the other is comparing apples and oranges. I like them both, they both do the job they were designed to do well.

Can you say D-90.com

It's not how they are treated it's just that this is "DISCOWEB" and they have their own web site so they choose not to come here. Just like folks with Freelanders have their own site and choose not to use this one.

D1's pick on D2's. series pick on everyone. everyone picks on Freelanders, etc. i am sure the jeep crowd does the same thing.
it's not about what is the best, but what is the best for your needs. i don't like freelanders, but who the hell cares. just does not suit my needs now.

yep no arguments here. its ok to be different as long as you know your niche. hell I'm about as different as they come. I like all kinda of motorsports and appreciate vehicles for what they are. I can have as much fun driving a 68 jeep commando with 4" of flex as a go anywhere full on trail truck. but I will also not be the guy saying the commando will do anything with the right driver either.

as I mentioned a year ago on here I will own a freelander some day .I think they are cool looking and when used ones are a dime a dozen I will buy one just as back in 94 when the disco came to north america I said when they are a dime a dozen I'll own one...now they are and I do.

there are many LR related sites out there to view. however for me, it doesn't matter if a 3.9, 4.0, 4.6 whatever engine is in a RR, Disco, Series it is the knowledge available from the core D-web posters that is worthwhile. there are alot of similarities among the models. the other sections are helpful for some specific questions on that LR. just recently a person commented on how helpful the Series board was here vs the RN board. personally glad there is an avenue to get support on the other LR models from people who know what the fuck they are talking about.

Axel,

Is there a way that you can add ranks or titles to our posts like the ones on Freelandy.net.org.gone?

If so, I have some suggestions for Kyle in particular - but perhaps you might get the "Supreme Commander" title?

I'd like to be called "Junior Contributing Blather Boy, 1st Division" if you can fit that.

Thank you!

P.S. We also took a Freelander on our "expedition" this past September and it kept up nicely. Only spun its tires on one off-camber section in Moab (Hi Mike!).

The thing is, the whole attitude over there is like the vegatarian thing - they constantly lambast carnivores and our beloved emission-spewing livestock, but always seem to try and make their soy and broccoli products more like meat?! I see many parallels here with the Freelander vs. Discovery crowd.

A non-biased Discovery owner,

Blue, I like to think of myself as multi-faceted :)

Frankly, I don't care WHAT someone drives, never have. I don't feel the need to jone down someone else's stuff to feel good about my own. Everything has it's place, and as with so many things in life, one only looks ridiculous when one tries to be what one is not. I don't look at the Freelander as a Disco wannabe or anything else. Nor do I look at the Disco as the poor step-child of the Defender or Series trucks. They yam what they yam. Yes I'm proud of my little stocker Disco, I waited a long time to get it. No, I haven't had the chance to off-road it, nor do I know much about all that, though I'm trying to learn. Does that make me less worthy? I don't think so. I do what I can when I can, and look forward to the future when I hope to get out there and have some fun. Life intervenes. When we have the money and time, we do stuff. Let everyone have their fun.

10 Best Land Rover Tools of All Time
10 Best Land Rover Tools of All Time

Forget the Snap-On Tools truck; it's never been there when you needed it. Besides, there are only 10 things in this world you need to fix any Land Rover, any place, and any time.

#1.- Duct Tape
Not just a tool, a veritable Swiss Army knife in stickum and plastic. It's safety wire, body material, radiator hose, upholstery, insulation, towrope, and more in an easy to carry package. Sure, there's prejudice surrounding duct tape in concourse competitions, but in the real world, everything from Lemans winning Porches to Atlas rocket use it by the yard.

#2.- Vice Grips
A.K.A. "The Mole Wrench" - Equally adapt as a wrench, hammer, pliers, bailing wire twister, breaker-off of frozen bolts and wiggle-it-till-it-falls off tool. The heavy artillery of your toolbox, vice grips is the only tool designed expressly to fix things screwed up beyond repair (and sometimes screw them up beyond even Vice Grip repair!). Also used to transfer intense welding heat to the palm of your hand.

#3.- Spray Lubricants
A considerably cheaper alternative to new doors, alternator, and other squeaky items. Slicker than pig phlegm, repeated soakings will allow the hull bolts of the Andrea Doria to be removed by hand. Strangely enough, an integral part of these sprays is the infamous little plastic tube that flies out of the nozzle and into orbit if you look at it cross eyed (one of the 10 worst tool components of all time).

#4.- Margarine Tubs with Clear Lids
If you spend all your time under the hood looking for a frendle pin that caromed off the petal valve when you knocked both off the air cleaner, it's because you eat butter. Real mechanics consume pounds of tasteless vegetable oil replicas just so they can use the empty tubs for parts containers afterward (some of course chuck the butter-colored goo altogether or use it to repack wheel bearings or to oil stop leaks from your front hubs). Unlike air cleaners and radiator lips, margarine tubs aren't connected by a time/space wormhole to the Parallel Universe of Lost Frendle Pins.

#5.- Big Rock at the Side of the Road
Block up a tire. Smack corroded battery terminals. Pound out a dent. Bop noisy know-it-all types on the noodle. Scientists have yet to develop a hammer that packs the raw banging power of granite or limestone. This is the only tool with which a "made in India" emblem is not synonymous with the user's maiming.

#6.- Plastic Zip Ties
After 20 years of lashing down stray hose and wiring with old bread ties, some genius brought a slightly slicked up version to the auto parts market. Fifteen zip ties can transform a hulking mass of amateur quality wiring from a working model of the Brazilian Rain Forest into something remotely resembling a wiring harness. Of course it works both ways. When buying a used car, subtract $100 for each zip tie.

#7.- Ridiculously Large Standard Screwdriver
Let's admit it. There's nothing better for prying, chiselling, lifting, breaking, splitting, or mutilating than a large flat bladed screwdriver particularly when wielded with gusto and a big hammer. This is also the tool of choice for all filters so insanely located that they can only be removed by driving a stake in one end and out the other. If you break the screwdriver and you will - just like Dad and your Shop teacher said - who cares, if it has a lifetime guarantee.

#8.- Bailing Wire
Commonly known as LR muffler brackets, bailing wire holds anything that's too hot for tape or ties. Like duct tape, it's not recommended for concourse competition since it works so well you'll never need to replace it with the right thing again. Bailing wire is a sentimental favorite in some circles, particularly with the MG, Triumph, and flathead Ford set, not to mention every British motorcycle ever made.

#9.- Bonking Stick
This monstrous tuning fork with devilishly pointy ends is technically known as a Land Rover motor mount adjuster, but how often do you adjust motor mounts? Once every decade if you're lucky. Other than medieval combat, its real use is the all purpose application of undue force, not unlike that of the huge flat-bladed screwdriver. Nature doesn't know the bent metal panel or frozen exhaust pipe that can stand up to a good bonking stick (Can also be used to adjust motor mounts in a pinch, of course, but does a lousy job of doing it).

#10.- A Quarter and a Phone Booth

Maybe bad ass but it's still just a police spotlight. I remember seeing them on a few vehicles down at OBX.

Yeah , skip the "OBX". That little prick Ian tripped my breaker over in the freeloader section in the dap lift thread. Something is seriously wrong with the shameless crowd...

Hey this guy openly admits the Freelander is not made for mud or anything hard.
Quote: "Being a Land Rover I was under the impression that the car could handle the mud, boy was I wrong. The result is a close to $9,000 repair bill..."

Good luck buddy? !@^#&%

Well, an auction is different than asking for handouts. If somebody wants to auction off items for whatever purpose, that's fine, I don't see a problem with that approach. You are not asking for money for nothing by running an auction. I think we have all sold items to raise cash from time to time.

I don't see any items I would be interested in bidding on, though

So if this guy can sell $90K worth of stuff, Darby's owner will recoup his losses. Well, that seems reasonable enough.

Whats with the little bastards on the Freelander site trashing Discoweb...and I quote...
Speaking of DISCOWEB...I went over there to see what the craps is all about...Well, let me tell you one thing...THAT PLACE IS SOOOOO OUT OF CONTROL, it's pathetic. They really slam Aaron's site and any FREELANDER owner...Almost everyone there, is plain and simple...AN ASS! I said Almost, not ALL.
They are vulgar, crude and rude to each other and anyone that has an opinion. In fact, it seems they are all trying to out do each other with smart ass remarks and SLAMS...There apperantly was a CONSPIRACY amongst them, to come over to Aaron's site and try to kick the bee's nest and get us HIPPO owners all stirred up...In fact after reading that rubbish on DISCOWEB for a few minutes, I began to realize these people are worthless idiots, and may have ruined a once very good website...Probably why (some) are looking to find a site Like Aaron's, to converse with responsible/respectable LR owners...If you want a good laugh, go vist the site and at least read the forum about flaming FREELANDERS which they call FREELOADERS

Just my 2 bits but Dennis is an ass. I have found more help for myself and my truck on this site than I ever could have imagined. Everyone has been friendly and helpful. I think the only reason he is pissed off is the whole size thing...no one want to admit they have a smaller unit...:D

oh and this on the Freelander page, if anyone wants to take me up on it...
"This is to Dennis, mostly, or anyone else that shares his views. I have nothing against the freelander for what it is, its not a bad little unit at all. However to trash discoweb for no reason??? Thats not very cool, I have recieved more help with my truck from that site than I ever would have imagined. And if you think they are crass and whatever it is all in fun, the same way that you would give a good friend a hard time. I have never seen anything mean or purposefully evil on the site. And as to a comparison, there is none. Freelander is a whole different ride, and to the guy who posted that "a Freelander can do anything a disco can do as long as its modified" I think not. What if I put the same mods on my disco as you put on your Freelander, are they still equal? As a matter of fact I'll go one further, I'll put my Disco up against any Freelander that wants to go offroad. I am in Utah but I am up for a short drive if any one wants to take me up on it. my email is:
[email protected]
And again, Im not saying that the Freelanders are bad, just different, its like comparing a 7 series bimmer to a 3 series, there is no comparison.....
Thanks for the space!!"

Actually I think the point is that he is he is begging for cash to fix the Freelander but it is allready fixed, he is begging for cash to pay off the credit card dept he accumulated while getting it fixed. It would be interesting to see if the response was different had he launched www.savemycredithistory.com instead of www.savedarby.com

errrr... That should have been "he is claiming to be begging for cash to fix the Freelander but it is allready fixed, he is really begging for cash....."

Don't know what happened there, sorry.

And yeah, Mike I think 'Dubya' would be proud of our friend's efforts to save the economy. :)
