If you want a really great sounding system, buy the best speakers you can for the front and disconnect the rear speakers all together. Stereo sound is not meant for listening with rear fill. Check out virtually any award winning car audio install and non of them have rear speakers. I myself have CDT Eurosport components in the front and no rear speakers. That probably didn't answer you exact question but if you really want rear speakers, I recommend the Diamond Audio M361i. Here is a set I just found on ebay: (I have nothing to do with the auction) http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1946097147 Rob |

do these aftermarket speakers plug right in? I have heard that aftermarket stuff will not work with the LR head unit........ james, did you plug the rockford subs right into the existing wiring without any problems? thanks, I'm looking to upgrade speakers, but I don't want to pull out the factory cd and deck scott |

The Rockfords I put in where the exact same size and plugged in the same way as the originals. As far as rear speakers go, why not have them, the space is available and the rear is a great place to put subs, which is what I did. Ive never heard of anyone taking the number of speakers out of a car to make it sound better. Plus it gives you more of a stereo sound rather than just sound coming from the side of your doors. No one gets in my disco with out saying how good the stereo sounds, and I still use the factory head unit. "Less is not always more." |

I'll try plugging in new speakers all the way around, I'll start with the subs, I'll try the Rockfords, especially if they just plug right in. thanks |

Looks like I miss understood you. I thought you were talking about the rear passenger door speakers and not the subs on the rear door (part of the "premium sound system". I'm not very framiliar with the rear door woofers and I don't know there size so I can't really tell you what would work. Anyone have more information on the rear subs? >> aftermarket stuff will not work with the LR head unit This is not true, aftermarket speakers will work fine but be sure to get 4 Ohm speakers or you will destroy your factory head unit. The biggest problem is that the factory unit will only output about 8 watts per channel (in real life, I don't care what LR actually says) which is not much to drive a set of nice speakers. You will end up with lots of distortion and poor mid to low range sound (however less than the factory speakers). >> Ive never heard of anyone taking the number of speakers out of a car to make it sound better. Well than you really don't know much about car audio or stereo sound. If you go listen to a CD on a $100,000 home audio system do you think there will be sound coming from rear speakers? No way. The sound will come from a left and right channel and a seperate subwoofer. The woofer does not have to be next to the left and right channels as the low range sound is not directional (your brain can't tell where it is coming from). >> Plus it gives you more of a stereo sound rather than just sound coming from the side of your doors. The definition for stereo sound is left and right channels. Mono is a single channel. Sourround sound includes rear speakers and dolby 5.1 includes a front center channel. James I'm not trying to tell you that your system doesn't sound good or you can't acheive good sound with rear speakers. But you can get "better" sound that is more true to the original recording with a system that is setup correctly and doesn't include rear speakers (other than a subwoofer). I'm into competition car audio. My Disco has thousands of dollars of audio equipment in it that is all reinforced for off-roading. I have mid range speakers in my front doors, tweaters in the A pilliars and a 10" sub in the rear (no rear speakers). Everything is driven by 2 amps putting out 1000W of power and let me tell you, 95% of everyone who hears it says it is the best sounding stereo they have ever heard. |

the biggest problem with the LR set up is the amp. just try installing a new head unit. trying to get an after market head unit to work with LR's amp is a pain. if i had the money, i woulda redone the whole thing. as far as just speakers, i'm sure you can plug in or splice in without any problems, especially if you're keeping the stock head unit. |

Since a speaker thread has started, I figured I would pipe in with my question.... For a 2000 Disco II with premium sound, what size are the front/rear door speakers? Are they 6.5? Also, is the rear sub (tail gate) a pair of 6.5 also? James - Which model Rockford Fosgate speakers did you put in? Thanks, Will |

I replaced all of the speakers in my 99D1 with Infinity 3.5" up front in the door (size issues), 4" back pillars, and 6.5" in the sub box. Something is wrong with the amp in the sub box as it comes and goes. The rear pillars fit great and sound good. The front door speakers are "engineered" to fit. I was able to retain the stock speaker covers so it looks original. I had to place the amp on the subs into the door cavity due to depth issues. I may not have the subs wired correctly. I tried about a zillion wiring combinations but I settled on the best sounding. Now I'm looking for the correct screw size to hold the grill on the sub box. Anyone have a clue? I need more bass and will probably go with a BASSLINK. |

I have heard JL audio makes a nice 6 inch sub that is supposed to fit in the rear door location |

I'm actually looking at the right now...I think the JL Audio subs are the Model 6W0. It says the mounting depth is 3.5 inches...could be a tight fit, but I've never open up the rear to see what the box looks like! Anybody with the Disco II speaker sizes for the front/back doors? From what I've read, it sounds like the subs in the tailgate are 6.5 Thanks, Will |

I'm actually looking at that right now....The JL Audio woofers are the model 6W0. It says their mounting depth is 3.5 inches...I haven't taken the sub apart, but it sounds like it might be a tight fit to get that in there. Maybe its the "midrange" 6 inch speakers from JL Audio that fit in there? Anyone know the stock speaker sizes for the Disco Series II for the front and back doors? Thanks, Will |

Jack, You replaced the front speakers w/ the infinity on your D1, did you leave the stock tweeters, do they still work? Scott |

If you just want to clean up your sound and have something that you dont have to replace every few years go with Kicker's MidBass driver for the rear sub panel, they are 6 inchers and require virtually no mods to install, they run great off of the factory power and they are not a sub, they are as advertised, a mid bass driver. oh and your front and rears are 6.5 front and rear on a D1. There are some pics of my set up in my gallery under Corey Shuman. But IMHO if you are putting a new deck in you are a fool, you are first asking for a break in and second, you dont know how to properly hook up the right components. Speakers, and the right placement and power is the key, the LR head is great for that and it works with your factory controls. Oh and for Rob, disconnecting the rears may work great in a honda civic with a box in the rear but I have yet to see any award winning system with no rear mids or highs. plus Im pretty sure that in getting a disco you may have people in the rear occasionally and your front speakers are going to sound like poop from that vantage point. Just my opinion. |

In the DII (I have a 2002) the front and rear door speakers are 6.5". The DII came stock with a 6.5" driver in the front doors and tweaters in the A Pillar (both have built in crossovers). I did not get the premium sound system so not sure what is in the rear cargo door. |

Yes. The stock tweeters are still there and functional. |
