Try a different dealer. I just had the exact same thing done for $410, which I still thought was mighty steep.

Take a look at http://www.d-90.com/~daveg/Maintenance/Schedule.JPG and decide for yourself if that's worth that much money.

Thats what I told my "Steeler", but he got me when he said it would help with any warrantee issues in the future. Consider it a little extra insurance. At least thats what I told myself when I got relieved of my cash.

Oh yea, I forgot to mention that after the service they recommended a $940 brake job. Ah... Rover service, their motto should be "We steal from you with a warm smile".

Chris, I have asked the service people about warranty issue. She said that unless I get extended warrenty, it shouldn't be a problem to DIY. unless you totally ignore the manufacturer RCOMMANDED service.
But I did it anyway and cost a little over 600! I did get a rental which they normally won't provide.

Well, I just had my 15k service done and the total with tax was $165.00. Took less than an hour and I can't decipher from the invoice what they even did. I imagine they changed the oil and checked the fluids and said Cha Ching.

My 30K service was only $350. Maybe there's something else that they are doing in addition to the service. Any brake work? I would think that anything additonal would be covered under warranty. Have them tell you exactly what they are doing and what is covered. NEVER hand over $$ unless you know what you are getting, regardless of what it's for.

Yea Greg. They "checked" my brakes and offered to do it for me for the low, low price of $940. What a deal!

Greg, how did the guys down at LR Charlotte like it when you showed up with 36s on the truck :)?

Yea, some dealers are terrible. The PO of our disco lived in PA and the local dealer had a hard time trying to mount the transmission in place of the rear axle. The guys where terrible.

Our current dealer, LR Charlotte is a lot better. Heck, they will replace clicker batteries for free! The people there are nice too.

Has anyone tried a local repair shop -- with LR experience -- for scheduled maintenance instead of going to the dealer? Are local guys interested in doing this kind of work? Prepared to do it (as in checklists or price lists for the standard items)?

I've been getting flyers in the mail for local shops, printed up by Atlantic British (I think) as a tie-in to the shop using AB for parts.

I'm kinda nostalgic about local shops -- caught the LR bug way back when in C'ville, VA, at a shop owned by a guy (can't remember his name) who worked on VWs (including my POS '80 Scirocco) to support his LR habit.
