It came up in an earlier thread as something someone had to replace. Could someone fill me in on the purpose of it and is it a common problem on DI. I looked in my haynes manual and another manual and they both say theat landrover techs should repair because of special tools needed. I don't currently have a problem but like to be studied up on all the problems I may have so i'm not so stressed when they come. My 97 DI has had most of the common problems and I've taken care of the majority and oddly enough, i'm glad they all happened and have been fixed so i don't live with the daily stress that i'm going to get stuck somewhere broken down.

thanks for any knowledge you can share.

John

kickdown cable basically tells the auto trans when to shift (automatically "kick down" into another gear). If your kickdown cable is loose or otherwise out of adjustment, your shifting will be off.

it relates to the point at which you have to push the pedal down to get it to change gears.

sometimes you can slam the pedal home and it wont "kick down" to the lower gear...

sometimes it;'s set to where you like to pause your foot while driveing, this ends up having the car shift to and fro between gears.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it only related to "kicking Down" the transmission? It has nothing to do with actual shift points of the ••••••?

Its actually not a "Kick down" cable at all. Its a cable that is hooked to a valve in the trans called a Throttle valve. When that valve is moved pressure in the trans rises and at a certain point ,,,BAM , it shifts down. The cable can be used to adjust shift points but really shouldnt be used for such... There is another part in the trans that controls the shift points.

how can you adjust the shift points?
As in make it shift at a higher RPM during part throtle acceleration.

You can do it with the TV cable but I dont reccomend going very far from the correct adjustment on it. It gets the desired result but other bad shit happens , not right away , but it happens...
The proper way is by making changes to the governor in the ass end of the trans...
